"NOT REAL"
Don't be fooled by the dime a dozen 4 leaf clover plants that produce ALL four leaves all the time!!
You may find other leaves as four-leaf clovers that are not unique that can be found around ponds and rock edges. These are actually Pepperwort or
Water Clover ( Marsilea creanata or dwarf water clovers ) or Oxalis (Oxalis deppei) or Oxalis tetraphylla plants that produce all four leaves.
Another way of identifying a real four-leaf clover is that the fourth leaf is usually smaller than the other three leaves.
What do the "REAL" FOUR leaves symbolize One leaf is for FAITH...The second for HOPE...The third for LOVE...And the fourth for LUCK!
In Irish tradition the Shamrock or Three-leaf Clover represents the Holy Trinity: one leaf for the Father, one for the Son and one for the Holy Spirit. When a Shamrock is found with the fourth leaf, it represents God's Grace.
A Four-leaf Clover Poem By Author: Ella Higginson
I know a place where the sun is like gold, And the cherry blooms burst with snow, And down underneath is the loveliest nook, Where the four-leaf clovers grow. One leaf is for HOPE, and one is for FAITH, And one is for LOVE, you know, And GOD put another in for LUCK --If you search, you will find where they grow. But you must have HOPE, and you must have FAITH, You must LOVE and be strong -- and so --If you work, if you wait, you will find the place, Where the four-leaf clovers grow.
History of the four leaf clover:
The four leaf clover is a universally accepted symbol of good luck with its origin ages old. According to legend, Eve carried a four leaf clover from the Garden of Eden. "The clovers also occupied a position in the cultural life of early peoples. White clover (T. repens L.) in particular was held in high esteem by the early Celts of Wales as a charm against evil spirits." Clover Science and Technology". N.L. Taylor, 1985. Druids held the 4 leaf clover in high esteem and considered them a sign of luck. In 1620, Sir John Melton wrote: "If a man walking in the fields find any four-leaved grass, he shall in a small while after find some good thing. The mystique of the four leaf clover continues today, since finding a real four leaf clover is still a rare occurrence and omen of good luck.
Clover identification: The plants that produce our four-leaf clovers are Trifolium repens , White Clover. Although, the plants mainly produce the common three-leaf clover (or Shamrock), we hand pick the lucky four-leaf unique clovers that the plant produces. Each leaf goes through a special preserving and drying process to preserve the natural green color.
Facts About Five-leaf Clovers?
Yes, the 5-leaf clover is a mutation like the 4-leaf clover that does appear occasionally, but less common than the 4-leaf clover. There are 6, 7 and other multiple leaf clovers that sometimes occur. What are the superstitions? The superstition for the 5-leaf clover is extra good luck and attracting money. I have not come across any published information on the superstitions of other multiple leaf clovers. What is the frequency of the 5 and other multiple leaf clovers? Since the 5-leaf and other multiple leaf clovers are random mutations and affected by weather and growing conditions, any individual studies would probably be meaningless.
Facts About Shamrocks
Do you know that there is no such thing as a "Shamrock Plant"? The word shamrock comes from the Irish word "seamrog" meaning "little clover". However, there are hundreds of varieties of clover. The question is...what is the "Original Irish Shamrock"? Here is what some respected authorities have to say: "The true Irish Shamrock, as identified by Nathaniel Colgan c. 1893 is a clover. It is not one of any or many clovers, it is one species, collected from a majority of counties at that time and with the exception of a very few plants, the majority were Trifolium repens or a form of this plant - White clover also known as Dutch Clover". 'From Ireland' Jane Lyons, Dublin, Ireland "White Clover, Trifolium repens ;forma minus, family Leguminosae, was the original shamrock of Ireland..." Academic American Encyclopedia, Vol. 17, 1990. "In Ireland, the plant most often referred to as shamrock is the white clover." The World Book Encyclopedia, Vol. 17, 1993. "Those most commonly called shamrocks are: the white clover, Trifolium repens, a creeping white-flowered perennial..." Collier's Encyclopedia, Vol. 20, 1992. "The clovers also occupied a position in the cultural life of early peoples. White clover (T. repens; L.) in particular was held in high esteem by the early Celts of Wales as a charm against evil spirits. According to Evans (1957), this pagen tradition was continued by early Christian leaders and became the symbol of the Holy Trinity for the Irish people." Clover Science and Technology, N.L. Taylor, 1985. Saint Patrick used the plant to illustrate the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Shamrocks have been considered by the Irish as good-luck symbols since earliest times, and this superstition has persisted in modern times among people of many nationalities. On March 17th, St Patrick's Day is celebrated around the world, with the "wearin' o' the green". The plants we grow are Trifolium repens , White Clover..."The Original Irish Shamrock"
How to Grow White Clover
PLANT HISTORY: White Clover, trifolium repens L. is considered by many authorities to be the Original Irish Shamrock. When the rare fourth leaf occurs, you have the "Lucky" Four-leaf Clover. The name "Shamrock" is used to describe several different plants. The Columbia Encyclopedia describes the Shamrock as "a plant with leaves composed of three leaflets." The plants sold around St. Patrick's Day are the Wood Sorrel (Oxalis acetosella) and the Lucky Shamrock (Oxalis deppei).
PLANT CHARACTERISTICS: White Clover, trifolium repens L. is a low growing perennial herb. The plant grows from the tip by sending out "runners" that take root, and new "runners" are formed from each rooting point. The seeds are produced in a white fluffy flower head. For White Clover to prosper, the soil should be well drained, kept moist and grown in full to moderate sun. They should be grown in trays or flower boxes that will allow the tips to make contact with the soil to produce the "runners". If grown indoors, they must be in a sunny location or the stems will stretch and the plant will become "leggy" with small leaves.
GROWING FROM SEED: Seeds can be sown in small pots or trays using any moist, well drained soil mix. For best results, we recommend using a packaged seed starting mix. The seeds should be distributed on the moist soil surface and lightly covered with additional soil. Use 1/4 teaspoon of seeds for 1 square foot of area. The pot or tray should be placed in a shaded location until the seeds germinate, which will be in about a week. Keep the soil moist and do not allow soil to dry out. After the seeds germinate and leaves appear move to a SUNNY location. When two or three true clover leaves (3 Leaf) have formed, you can begin fertilizing with an all-purpose fertilizer at the recommended rate for the container. If necessary, thin-out weak plants. Plants should fill out in 6-8 weeks. Transplant when roots appear at the bottom of the pot drainage holes.
TRANSPLANTING: Depending on how you started your seeds, you'll want to transplant to a larger container when roots appear out the bottom of the pot or tray. Be careful not to damage the roots when transplanting. After transplanting continue fertilization as before.
INDOOR CARE: Keep plants well watered (make sure container drains well) and keep in a SUNNY location. Continue fertilization as before. Try to keep tips in contact with the soil and remove any damaged leaves. Growing outdoors in full sun is preferred for best growth and flowering.
OUTDOOR CARE: Outdoor care is the same as indoor care, except increase the fertilization to the recommended outdoor amount for container plants. Clover can also be planted in outdoor beds. Plants will go dormant during winter and re-emerge in the spring.
SEED STORAGE: If you are storing seed for future planting, seal seed package and store in a cool, dry area. For prolonged storage, you can refrigerate or freeze seeds.
How to Preserve Clovers
Here are some methods for preserving Four-leaf Clovers: 1. You can press and dry the leaf between pieces of paper and press it in a book. 2. You can press and dry the leaf between pieces of wax paper with a warm iron. 3. You can use a clear adhesive laminate attached to a card or paper backing. 4. You could also seal the leaf in a small jar of alcohol to preserve it. It will turn white and if you remove it from the alcohol, it will deteriorate.
Tips on Growing the Good Luck Plant.
The Good Luck Plant: The shamrock plants that are sold around St. Patrick's Day are usually species of Oxalis. Oxalis leaves are clover shaped and can be shades of green, red, or purple. The oxalis blossoms can be white, yellow, pink or red. The Good Luck Plant(Oxalis Deppei) has green leaves and pink blossoms. This is also known as the Lucky Shamrock Plant or Iron Cross Plant. The leaflets fold up at night or during overcast days and open during daylight hours.
Tips on Growing Oxalis Deppei: When you receive the bulbs they should be planted immediately or refrigerated until you're ready to plant. Oxalis Deppei prefers a SUNNY LOCATION for best growth and flowering. These plants prefer soil that is kept barely moist and will do fine if the soil dries slightly between watering. Plants should be fertilized only when the plant is actively growing. Any all purpose fertilizer will do. After a period of active growth, the plant should be allowed to rest or go dormant. The first sign that a plant is entering dormancy is leaf die-back. If this begins to occur, stop watering and fertilizing the plant. The leaves can be cut back or allowed to die-back on their own and the plant should be moved to a cool, dark place tor one to three months, after which new foliage will start emerging from the soil. When this occurs, move the plant to a SUNNY LOCATION and begin watering and fertilizing Good Luck Plant It's Fun and easy to grow this attractive, flowering good luck plant, often referred to as the Four-leaf Shamrock. Although not a true four-leaf clover, this Oxalis plant grows four clover-like leaves and blooms with pink flowers.
