The NYPD has an variety of Citations and Commendations awarded to Members Of The Service for Outstanding Achievment.They are listed as follows
IN CORRECT ORDER
DEPARTMENT MEDAL OF HONOR-Awarded annually to a member of the service who intelligently in the performance of Police Duty distinguished himself/ herself by the performance of an act of Bravery and Valor, at imminent personal hazard to life, with knowledge of the risk, above and beyond the call of duty. (Green citatation with 12 gold stars)
POLICE COMBAT CROSS-Awarded for the successful performance of an act of extordinary heroism while engaged in personal combat with an armed adversary with imminent personal hazard to life in the intelligent performance of duty. (Green plain Citation) Worn below Medal Of Honor.
POLICE COMBAT CROSS (SECOND AWARD)-SAME-A gold palm leaf is added to the Combat Cross.
MEDAL FOR VALOR-Awarded for an act of outstanding personal bravery intelligently performed in the Line of Duty at imminent personal hazard to life under circumstances evincing a disregard for personal consequences. Dark blue plain citation.Worn below Combat cross.
MEDAL FOR VALOR-SECOND AWARD-A gold palm leaf is added to the Medal For Valor
PURPLE SHIELD MEDAL-Awarded to Members of The Service who have sustained extremely serious physical injury or death permenant disfigurement, permanent impairment of health or protracted or permanent impairment of any bodily function. This is one you really don't want.

HONORABLE MENTION-(ABOVE) Awarded for an act of extroadinary bravery, intelligently performed, in The Line Of Duty at imminent and personal danger to life. This award is three color fields, green, white and blue and dressed with a silver star. Display in descending order.
EXCEPTIONAL MERIT-Awarded for an act of bravery, intelligently performed, involving personal risk to life. This award is the same as the Honorable but with a green star.
COMMENDATION-Awarded for an act involving a) Grave personal danger OR (b) A highly creditable or unusual Police Accomplishment. AGAIN, same as Exceptional Merit but with a bronze star.
COMMENDATION*COMMUNITY SERVICE* Light blue star
COMMENDATION*INTEGRITY*- SAME AS ABOVE WITH DARKER BLUE STAR
MERITORIOUS POLICE DUTY-Awarded for: An act of intelligent and valuable Police Service demonstrating special faithfulness or perserverance, OR (b) highly creditable acts of Police Service over time. Three fields of green white and blue. NO STAR
EXCELLENT POLICE DUTY-(a) An intelligent act materially contributing to a Police accomplishment, OR (b) Submission of a device or method adopted to inprove efficiency in an administrative or tactical procedure. Two fields of green and white.
It should be noted that upon receiving a second award for the MPD and EPD, a number is placed in the center of the particular award indicating how many of those particular awards the recipient holds. The numbers are replaced each time a recipient receives another of that award. This also holds true for The Unit Citation.
