I know there is a lot of discussion about how to tell the difference between the Variety 1 (low relief with bold lettering) and Variety 2 (delicate lettering and sharp design), so, I decided to throw my 'two cents' into the ring on this subject. 99-100 times you will find the Variety 1 in the 1975 Proof and/or Mint Sets and the Variety 2 in the 1976 Proof and/or Mint Sets. Both the '75 and '76 Proof and Mint Sets are dated 1976, but, if you buy a '75 and a '76 Proof and/or Mint Set and lay them side by side with the reverse of the Ike facing you, you will instantly see the '75 will have the thick fat lettering on the 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' around the top and the 'ONE DOLLAR' on the bottom that is attributed to the Variety 1; while the '76 Proof and/or Mint Set will have the thinner lettering associated with the the Variety 2 in the same 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' and 'ONE DOLLAR'. They don't tell you this in your Red Book, and, dealers' aren't going to tell you how easy it is to find the two varieties, because, then they couldn't charge the premium they get for keeping it a mystery. If you wish to acquire each of the two varieties, just purchase a 1975 and 1976 Proof and Mint Set, break the Ikes' out and lay the respective '75 Ike (either Proof or Mint State) with the corresponding '76 and you will have the 6 different clad varieties at one time. Happy hunting!
