Tye-Dyeing
Materials you will need and can buy on eBay:
- Item to dye- (T-shirts, pants, socks, sheets, pillow cases, fabric, hair bows)
- Plastic apron or apron you don't mind getting dye on
- Rubber gloves
- Rubber bands
- Long-handled utensil (plastic spoon or plastic stirrer)
- Fabric Dye (use any color you choose)
- Recycled newspaper
- Liquid laundy soap
- Large plastic bucket or tub
Instructions:
- Prewash the fabrics you will be dyeing in liquid laundy soap
- Use fabrics that are atleast 50% cotton
- Decide on a pattern: "Spiral"- hold the fabric in the spot where you want the center where you want the spiral to be. Twist the fabric into a point, adding rubber bands just below the point going down till the desired length. "Concentri circles" - same as above but do not twist. "V" "Pattern" - fold the fabric in half, then fold in even segments, accordion style. Add rubber bands in desired areas. "Strips" - roll the fabric into a tubeular form. Fasten rubber band along the fabric in desired areas.
- Wear rubber gloves to prevent dye from getting on your hands.
Now lets start dyeing
-
Lay the clothing out flat on table, then fold to desired pattern.
-
Prepare the dye per manufacture directions in plastic bucket or tub. Will need 3 or 4 buckets or tubs if you want different colors. Stir with plastic spoon or plastic stirrer.
-
Soak the fabric in the dye according to label. Colors will be lighter on fabric then in bucket, so the longer you let them soak the darker the color on the fabric.
-
Squeeze out the fabric (while wearing gloves) to get out excess dye.
-
Rinse the fabric in cold running water until the water is clear. (It is best not to use your washing machine because it will put dye resido in it)
-
Air dry the fabric on newpaper (best not to hang) (do not dye in cloths dryer)
-
When dry admire your creation!
Care for your tye-dyed item:
Be sure to wash your items separetly in cold water after dyeing using liquid laundry soap and hang dry the first couple of times you wash to prevent bleeding on other clothes.
