Tuba albums can be difficult to locate. The tuba LP I have seen consistently bring hefty prices is the Bill Bell solo tuba album. It comes in two versions. The up close photo of Mr. Bell on a blue background (first printing) or the standing photo on a solid white background (second printing). The original photo is unique since if you look closely enough in the reflection on the bell, you'll not only see the legendary virtuoso Harvey Phillips, but his wife Carol as well looking on from behind a wall. Hopefully Mr. Bell's recording will become available to our generation. Until then, this is the only way to hear this legendary musician! I have seen either album version bring anywhere from $20 on up in value. I have only had the luck to see one autographed version for sale and it was quickly pulled before the auction ended. It had reached over $200!!!
Though not singularly a tuba solo album, the Chicago Symphony Trombone/Tuba (or Low Brass) section recording of orchestral excerpts is extremely tough! This album features Arnold Jacobs, considered by many to be the epitomy of orchestral tuba playing and pedgogy. The trombone section is top-notch as well! I have only witnessed two of these albums for sale in the past four years!!! They both sold well into the $150+ range. The low print of @2,000 copies will keep prices high on this album. If you can't add the original to your collection, pick up the CD re-issue! Great buy!
The Harvey Phillips Golden Crest recordings are another tough find. I have seen (or paid) anywhere from $20 to $50 for his solo albums. The dominating factor of course is how playable the album still is since the majority of his solo recordings are yet to be released. If you don't have luck hunting Mr. Phillips solo albums, try finding his studio work. The number of available recordings is astounding as well as the all-star ensembles he performed with. Groups and persons to look for are Sauter-Finegan Orchestra, Patrick Williams, Late 40's Barnum-Bailey Band, Phillips-Matteson TubaJazz Consort, Curtis Fuller, and Golden Striker to name a few. You won't be disappointed!!!
The prices I mentioned are not set in stone, just fluctuations I have seen in my quest for tuba recordings on Ebay. If you have found any errors or would like to let me know prices you have seen on albums, let me know! Hope this was helpful!!!
