Tub Dying with Fiber Reactive Dye
Best for solid color dying of any natural fabric
This process will permanently bond color with your items, not stain them like most grocery and craft store dyes!!
In Washing Machine, Tub, Tote, Sink, etc...
FOR 1/2Lb Fabric ; 1 1/2gal water, 1 1/2 Cups Salt, 1/6 Cup Soda Ash
FOR 1Lb Fabric; 3gal water, 3 Cups Salt, 1/3 Cup Soda Ash
For 8Lb Machine Load; 20 gal water, 10 Cups Salt, 2 1/2 Cups Soda Ash
1. Pre wash fabric with a textile detergent, plain dish liquid, or some other basic laundry liquid without any softeners or extras. You need to get any and all oils, dirt, grease and starch off your clothing/fabric for the dye to "fix" on your fabric.
2. Disolve the salt in your warm water. Add water softener if your water is hard. Hard water can make your finished product dull.
3. Dissolve the dye in a cup of warm water then add to the "bath" with your salt and water to dissove evenly. Colors with red can sometimes "spot", you may want to paste these in a small amount of water before mixing with a cup to make it liquid.
4. Add fabric and stir constantly for 20 minutes. You can get away with stirring thoroughly every 3 to 4 minutes if you nead a rest.
5. Dissolve Soda Ash in HOT water and add to your dye bath, slowly, over 15 minutes. Stir constantly while mixing this in. Do not pour near or over fabric, keep your fabric to one side and pour oposite it. Stir frequently for 30 more minutes for light colors and over an hour for dark or deep colors.
6. You can now drain your tub and rinse with Cold water. The cold will rinse out the Soda Ash compleately and stop the fixing process.
7. Once your fiber rinses clear you can wash with hot water and your items are done.
Salt, Soda Ash and Water measurements are specific for each pound of fabric. If you are dying less than a pound than reduce your water. Your fabric should be able to move freely in the tub to avoid streaking and spotting.
For blacks and very dark colors use 2X the amount of salt.
For washing machines you will need to set to manual operation, or keep a sharp eye on it and not let it drain. Keep turning back to the beginning of your wash before the water can drain.
The dye will not hurt or leave residue in your machine, but if you would like to be safe, rather than sorry, bleach some old towels after you are done.
Aproximately 3 to 4 T-shirts is a pound.
ALWAYS DO A TEST BATCH IF YOUR END RESULT IS IMPORTANT OR YOU ARE DYING SOMETHING IRRIPLACEABLE!!! Dying is an art. We can not guarantee any end results. There are too many factors; hardness of your water, exact weight of items, thickness of fabric, makeup of fabric, dye lot of your batch of dye...
