I am kept awake at night by Restless Leg Syndrome. The medications available to treat this problem didn't work for me. I happened to have on hand a device called an EMS unit which is short for Electro Muscular Stimulation. This is a small handheld device that delivers electrical stimulation to a muscle, causing it to contract. I normally use it for chronic back pain. One night when the restless leg syndrome was so bad I felt like jumping out a window, I decided to try the EMS unit on my legs. I applied the electrodes to the areas of my lower legs that were bothering me. I used enough stimulation to create sustained contraction deep into the muscles. It was uncomfortable at first as the muscles were contacting. The RLS symptoms become more intense at first. But after a few deep sustained contractions the symtoms went away. I use it anytime RLS occurs and it always works. This device requires a doctor's prescription and supervision to use. I believe it can also be used under the supervision of a Physical Therapist. It costs about $100.00 and can be located by typing "EMS Unit" into your search engine. The device probably won't be covered by insurance for Restless Leg Syndrome because it hasn't been FDA approved for the treatment of Restless Leg Syndrome. As far as I know I'm the only person who has tried it for RLS. Please only use the device under the supervision of a doctor because delivering an electric current to the wrong areas of your body like over your heart or the front of your neck can cause dangerous abnormal heart rhythms. If you have really terrible RLS that doesn't respond to other treatments it may be worth discussing this option with your doctor. Update - I have located a device called the Super Hand Acu Massager, which can be found by typing this into your search engine. This device works like an EMS unit in that it delivers electrical stimulation to the aching restless muscles. Its touted as having effects similar to acupuncture. It is available without a prescription and costs less than $50.00 on some web sites.
