Perhaps you're looking for unique items to sell right here on eBay or maybe you just collect for yourself. Some of the best places to find vintage and antiques are right in your backyard if you are willing to do the legwork. It is time consuming but can be so much fun! Bring a friend and make a day of it. I've highlighted some easy steps for you.
1. First look in your local paper for upcoming garage sales, church sales, estate sales and tag sales. Scan the ads for things you think you might be interested in. Get a piece of paper and map out your day by address first, then interest second. This will make it much easier then skipping around and wasting a lot of gas.
2. Get up nice and early and make sure you have cash. Many people will accept checks but it's a hassle and you might just find that one treasure at a place that won't take a check. You don't want to miss out. You can also pack a little cooler with some drinks and goodies. Don't forget to stick a few nice sized boxes in your trunk with some bubble wrap so you can wrap glassware. You don't want to get home and find your treasures in shards.3. Hit the road. Be aware that you may encounter some rude pushy people. Pay them no mind at all! It's like a treasure hunt, seriously, each man for him/herself. Keep your smile on and just know you are better than that.
4. Look for unique things. Ask yourself, have I ever seen anything like this before? Perhaps things you remember from your childhood as well. Look for signed items. There are thousands of names and I can't very well cover them all here. But I'll give you a few: Pyrex, Roseville, Occupied Japan, Fenton, Carnival, Made in England, Germany, McCoy, Glidden, Fulper, Trifari, S Coventry, Avon and the list goes on and on. Spend some time researching right here on eBay and getting acquainted with antiques and vintage ware -- see what sells. What sells goes in cycles. Pyrex might be hot for 6 months then dive. So if you're looking to sell I can't say it enough - do the homework. You don't have to obsess in finding signed items either, there are many wonderful unsigned pieces that are treasures.
- At a garage sale if you see something and you need a minute to decide, pick it up and look it over. You can always put it back but chances are if you leave it thinking to come back after you look around, it most likely will be gone.
-Estate sales are usually set up with tags or tape on everything. If it's a large item you take the tape, that means you are going to buy it. Lot's of dealers swarm these sales so be quick in deciding and pulling that tape.
-Use your instincts, go with your first thought.
5. Don't be afraid to bargain! If something has $5.00 on it, ask if they will take 3.00. The worst that can happen is you will get a no. No harm done. At an estate sale usually they will not bargain on day 1, day 2 can offer as much as 50% off- you won't find the selection but I've found some great treasures by going in late. If it's meant to be yours, it will be!
6. Use your fingers and skim across glass to make sure a piece has no chips. Look for cracks and breaks. Try to find items in perfect condition.7. The most important thing, have fun! Collecting should be fun and enjoyable.
Okay so you're not up for all that? Shop for this merchandise on eBay. eBay sellers offer great deals. You never know when you can sneak in there and grab yourself a great bargain.
1. Look for sellers who offer combined shipping so you can get more bang for your buck.
2. Read their feedback and get a feel for what past customers have to say.
3. Make sure they package good! Always pay for shipping insurance. It's cheap and well worth it.
4. Read the auctions good, be an informed buyer. If you have questions be sure to contact the seller before you bid. A good seller will always be more than willing to answer your questions.
5. If you come across something you like, search it on eBay for the same or similar to see what other pricing and information you can find on it.
You still have to do the "legwork", only you'll be sitting right here!
Happy Treasure Hunting!!
