The new Traxxas E-Revo is a pretty good first attempt at a 1/8 scale truck/truggy. It is "Traxxas durable", reliable, Ready To Race out of the box, and is extremely adjustable with: toe-in and camber for both front and rear wheels, ride height, spring rate, variable wing height and angle, variable dampening by using different oil or different included shock pistons, different included progressive shock rocker arms, center of gravity by moving the battery packs forward or back, and just about all the parts are very easy to find since this truck uses a lot of the same parts as the Revo 3.3 or Platinum Edition.
~ No conversion mods needed to turn nitro into electric...finally!
~Traxxas builds their vehicles very tough and this is no exception.
~Uses many same parts as previous Revo versions so they are very easy to find!
~Uses many upgraded parts that the Platinum Edition Revo uses like the GTR shocks.
~Comes in a Ready-To-Race package with everything needed to run, just add your own batteries.
~Single speed transmission is simple and durable. Adjustable slipper clutch works very well to protect the drive-line. No need for a 2-speed transmission like the nitro versions have to use because electric motors have the same torque at 10 RPM as they do at 15,000 RPM. Nitro motors have to use 2 or 3 speed trannys because they only produce good torque at a certain RPM.
~Good acceleration and the stock ESC has Anti-lock Braking so you can slow down for corners very well even on loose dirt!
~Can be tuned for racing with low ride height or just bashing in almost any condition with so many adjustment options.
~It comes with different springs, rockers, shock pistons, etc so don't have to spend more money for a different setup right away
~Rims look cool and tires are pretty durable so they don't wear out very fast but still have decent grip on or off road.
CONS:
~Battery trays are fairly small so only medium sized LiPOs will fit in the 29mm x 51mm x 154mm dual trays.
~Motors are decent torque but fairly slow RPM so it only goes about 20mph on 16.8V NiMH or 29mph on 4s 14.4V LiPOs.
~Price...it is pretty expensive for how slow it goes compared to any other 1/8 scale trucks.
~Power consumption is pretty high, nitros get about 6mins per tank, this gets about 8 mins per pair of NiMH battery packs.
~Stock spring rate and oil weight was way too weak for any off road situations. It bottomed a lot and wore through a rear skidplate in 3 days of driving before I went to Progressive3 rockers and stiffer springs.
~The way the slipper clutch mounts to the spur gear with 3 screws makes the spur gear wobble (both mine and my friend's wobbled out of the box) and I found that changing the torque of each of the 3 screws (1 tight, 1 med, 1 semi-loose with thread-lock) straightened it out. CNC'ed aluminum parts would be better than plastic ones here since the plastic ones were molded slightly different which is why it doesn't exactly line up straight with equal torque on all 3 screws. Wobble in the spur gear will cause a lot of premature wear on the spur gear and pinion so fix this first.
~Rims aren't super strong compared to Pro-Line rims and you can easily crack a spoke if you hit something at more than 15mph.
~Requires $200+ to make it as fast or faster than a Revo 3.3 or other similar truck, but spending $600+ to go brushless is WAY better.
PROS:
~65MPH+...need I say more? An electric R/C truck that breaks the freeway speed limit is simply amazing!
~I smoke any nitro truck and even most nitro buggies on every track I've raced on!
~NEVER a lack of torque, power, or top-end speed (if you are already going 40mph and punch it it will still wheelie and flip over backwards!)
~Runs for 31mins on dual 4s 14.4V 4500mAh LiPOs, or 15mins on a 6s 22.2V 4300mAh LiPO.
~It will back-flip or front-flip off almost any small jump by punching forward or reverse in the air! 2 or 3 flips off bigger jumps!
~Wheels spin so fast at +60mph you can rip the rubber right off your rims. It "looks" amazing when it happens!
CONS:
~Total setup cost of my brushless E-Revo was $1340
~Tires have to be replaced often if you have a heavy trigger finger since you can smoke the tires even at 40mph if you punch it.
~Hitting anything at top speed will not just break an arm or bend a pushrod, it will destroy your entire vehicle!
~Brushless has so much power you will take a finger right off if you are holding a tire, rim, or axle and accidentally touch the throttle.
~Wheels spin so fast at +60mph you can rip the rubber right off your rims. It only "looks" amazing...the repair costs are not.
