How hard is it to train my pet with the Petsafe Underground Fence system? This is a question many customers ask. Petsafe include a Training Manual and CD with every fence they sell so you will receive all the tools you need to successfully train your pet to stay in the confines of your yard.

The goal of training is to have your pet believe that the stimulation came from his behavior, once your pet learns this he will eventually learn that it is best not to do it.

As effective and safe as hidden fences are at keeping dogs within the yard, they still require training and responsible pet ownership.

  • Set time aside for two practice sessions per day that are 10-15 minutes each. You and your dog will appreciate short, fun lessons that makes the training more effective.
  • Review the previous day’s activities to see if your dog is learning on schedule
  • Since different dogs learn at different rates, your dog’s behavior will tell you when it is time to proceed to the next level. So be patient and don’t be surprised if your dog catches on faster or maybe takes a little longer.
  • Walk your leashed dog through the yard and boundaries to teach him the warning tone and correction zone.
  • Take your dog around to the boundaries of your entire yard talking and pointing out the area you want to be observed. Do not let your dog go beyond the boundary.
  • Always end it on a high note with more play and praise.
  • In just a few sessions, your dog will understand how the system works and will eventually learn to respond just to the audio tone.

As you get closer to the end of your training you will be able to remove the flags, this can be as short as 4 days but you should continue until you feel comfortabe.

Once trained, you should closely monitor your dog while using the containment system, especially for the first few months.

  • It goes without saying, you should never leave your dog outside unattended for long periods of time.

Using a magnetic field and safe, mild static corrections combined with a warning beep, the Radio Fence® pet containment system helps your pet learn which areas are for playing and which are off-limits. With proper and consistent training, your dog quickly learns the limits of his yard.
