Most common ways a PC will fail
(1) Not updating software and drivers:
One of the most common failures of a PC can be traced to not having the most up to date software and drivers. You will find this most helpful on CD/DVD burning software. Most PC’s are set to update from Microsoft automatically, this changes Windows and how it functions in many cases.
Some hardware items will show a update for a driver at Microsoft if you manually update your PC, this will not be the case if you use a automatic update. Microsoft will ONLY install critical updates in this way.
Make sure to Visit the manufacture of your parts from time to time to check if any updated software is available.
(2) Heat is a killer:
As PC’s get faster and processors boost core voltage you will notice PC’s run hotter than they use to, on many lower end PC’s they do not allow for adequate cooling. By using just one fan to cool the PC tower and a duct for the CPU. This is commonly found in Dell, HP and low end PC’s.
To improve the longevity of your PC you need to check from time to time to make sure the fans are spinning and that dirt is not clogging the system. Many processor fans will plug the heat sink causing it to not be able to ventilate. This will cause the CPU/processor to skyrocket the temp. This can and will shorten the life of the PC.
Many stores sell dust off and should be used to clean out the PC. Depending on how dirty it is you just may want to take it outside to blow out. Remember electronics are dust magnets. Make sure the PC is turned off and unplugged
(3) Keep Windows safe:
Keeping Windows safe can take a lot of work, also a lot of software. Having the right software can have a huge impact on that task. Most that cost little or no money.
Antivirus, this is the most important ! Many viruses can’t be repaired if they made it by the software, so it’s very important to keep it auto updated and manually update it from time to time to make sure It’s in a working order.
Spyware, a lot of websites add cookies or scripts to react to out browser. Example of browsers is Explorer, Fire Fox, and AOL. It’s important from time to time to clean out temp files and scan for spyware. Spyware will try many different things that include collecting data about what you do and also personal data as well. Banking info, ect...
You want to run software to clean items collected while running on the internet. A great tool to fight spyware is Web Roots Spy Sweeper, now this is a purchase program but works great. Now I’m not here to promote any one software app, but explaining what works good with windows. So free apps would include Adaware and spybot S&D. These can be Googled and found easily. Be careful in what you download as many FREE APPS include spyware. So be sure to check them out.
(4) Power is key:
Having a good power source can be crucial ! Most people purchase a power stripe and figure the power problems are solved. This is a very commonly confused thought. A power stripe ONLY protects you from a voltage spike ABOVE 120 Volts. This does nothing for a brownout. A brownout will cause the most failures. This is when you have under the required voltage to run the PC, so anything under 120 Volts is a brown out. This is commonly found in the event of a storm or problem with power lines. This is famous for killing power supplies and laptop power cords. The only true way to protect you from this is a battery backup. This will supply the PC/Laptop with a constant 120 Volts even in a power outage or brown out. Most battery backups will include software to safely shut the PC off in the event that power is lost. This will keep all Hard drive data and power devices safe. It ’ s also a good idea to plug in the cable modem and router into this, keeping everything safe on the network.
