I recently visited "Tootsie's Orchid Lounge" in Nashville, Tennessee. I have been to the place many times over the years. The small bar is located just across the alley from the Ryman Auditorium. Tootsie's Orchid Lounge is located on Broadway and just across the street is the "Wheel", a bar I played in many years ago when I was recording in Nashville. Ernest Tubb's Record Shop is a few doors down from the Wheel. The photo is that of "Hank Williams and Audrey's Corral" which they opened a few doors down from Tubb's shop.
The walls of Tootsie's are filled with photographs of country music artists from the past and today. When the bar was known as "Mom's" place, Hank Williams Senior was a frequent visitor. One can imagine just how many times Hank would slip out the side door of the Ryman and go into Mom's Place for a drink!
One can see just about anybody at Tootsie's. The last time I was in Nashville, I ran into an aquaintance from West Virginia who was playing music at Tootsie's that day. That person was one of the writer's of Johnny Paycheck's hit "The Only Hell My Momma Ever Raised". Just goes to show that anyone can be seen at Tootsie's on any given day. I would urge anyone who really loves country music to visit Tootsie's the next time you are in Nashville. It is quite a place with a great history.
