Greetings. I've been collecting comic book art for over ten years. It's a great hobby because:
1. You are dealing with one of a kind items vs. trying to guess with comic books which ones are really rare and which ones aren't.
2. Comic book art is truly an artistic form. You are getting a real piece of human-drawn art. Not some mass published/printed comic.
3. You get a much better feel for the artist when you see the large-format artwork vs. the scanned down tiny images in a comic. If you like an artist in print, you will LOVE them in art.
Here's Scot Wingo's guide/tips to collecting Todd McFarlane art. Todd worked on many comics and the three most popular series were Amazing Spider-man (ASM), Spider-man (SM) and Spawn. Spawn art is extremely rare, spider-man the next rare and there's a fair amount of ASM work out there.
The most sought after pages are covers with double page spreads next, splash pages and finally panel pages. If the artwork includes spider-man in an action shot that is the best.
If the page is signed that tends to make it more collectible.
While I've never heard of any fake pages or fraud specific to this niche, I'm sure it exists. Unfortunately there are no COAs with original art. Use your common sense and look at the seller's reputation, look at the page and check out comic art sites to see if the art is owned by anyone else already.
I hope you enjoyed this guide and found it useful!
