When buying jeans on Ebay through it can be difficult to figure out what is authentic and what is not. I love designer jeans and figured I would share what I do know about how to figure out what is authentic and what is not on Ebay. Once I bought my first pair I was addicted. The allure with designer jeans for me is the fit and quality. I can go to a department store and try on 20 pairs of jeans non-designer brands but none of them will compare in fit or quality to some of the major designer jean brands. I have personally found Seven for all Mankind, Rock and Republic, Paige and Joes jeans are some of the best fits.
My first recommendation is looking on the internet for one of the many websites that offer help in authenticating jeans. If you do a search "authenticate jeans" you will come across many websites (authentic forum, denim dna) that will help you in your quest for the perfect pair of authentic jeans. Many of these sites are run by designer jean junkies who can easily spot a fake pair of jeans, like a needle in a haystack.
My second recommendation is to go the store and look at the little things about the jeans you like- details! I have found little details are one of the easiest ways to tell an authentic pair of jeans from fakes.
For example if you look at the inside seams on a pair of Rock & Republic jeans they will have a strip of cloth about 3/4 - 1 inch thick along the inner seams that is usually stitched with one of the colors of contrast stitching used on the jeans. It has a nice tailored look and should look as if there is enough extra fabric on the inside seam that you can let them out if you need to. A fake pair usually does not have this strip of extra cloth, and are poorly stitched. You will see little threads all over and much less stitching; as if whoever made the jeans was trying to save money on thread!
Look at the first 2 pictures, these are the authentic jeans, do you notice how they use thread on the inner seam that is the same color as the stitching on the jeans? In the next 2 pictures which are the fakes, they use a couple different colors thread, and none of which are of the color stitching on the jeans. The other thing thats fairly noticeable is the workmanship of the inner seams. (as well as the workmanship on the rest of the jeans!) The inner seams in the first 2 pictures look well tailored and as if they put lots of time into making them. In the second 2 pictures the inner seams look as if they are ready to fall apart and the stitching is terrible! Stitching is a small detail, but it can often help you tell the difference between authentic jeans and fake jeans! This is also one of the few details the fakers will never get right. Now that you have seen both and compared them, don't you find it is easy to tell the difference? The only time I have not seen this type of stitching on a pair of Rock & Republic jeans is with a few of the older styles. But even then the stitching alone is much better than any fakes I have ever seen. This is very effective in a department store as well if you suspect you have come across a fake pair. Just look inside at the seams and if they do not have the look of a well tailored pair of jeans, chances are they are not a well tailored pair of jeans.
This holds true with fit as well. Part of the allure of designer clothing is not just about the name brand, but the fit. If you have ever tried on a pair of fakes then an authentic pair of jeans the difference is immediate. Designer items are made with better materials and have better workmanship, therefore providing a better fit. Once again this is a detail, but but these details are what make the designer item worth paying the money for.
Every time I go to a store to shop or try a new designer brand I check the following details; the inside seams, do these look well made? Where is the item made? If is made in china chances are it is fake, and if it look like it is made in china chances are it is fake. Does the item have a tailored fit? Does the item fit as if it were made just for you? What does the material feel like? Is it durable and tightly woven or cheap and feel as if it may rip at any moment? These are small things to look at when out shopping. When spending a large sum of money on a pair of jeans or blouse you should expect nothing but the finest quality, materials, and workmanship.
When on Ebay don't be afraid to ask for pictures of the inside hems, or close ups of some of the stitching. Once you receive the item use the following details to determine if the item is authentic and if still unsure go to a site such as authentic forum to have someone authenticate the item for you.
Also don't always believe what you read! Just because a person says an item is authentic does not mean it is!
There are many sellers with fake jeans listed on Ebay advertised as authentic! Many sellers will swear their fake jeans are authentic. Granted, many people can't tell the difference and often think their fake jeans are real, and many people think real jeans are fake! I once had someone ask to return a pair of authentic jeans claiming they were fake- Well thank god for websites such as authentic forum because they authenticated the jeans and helped resolve the issue.(Turns out the jeans didn't fit the way the person expected!?)
Once again my biggest recommendation for authenticating jeans is joining one of the websites that will help and teach you. I am sure many people who read this may already be a member, but if you are not DO IT NOW!
