After buying and selling glass on eBay for over six years, I have learned a few things about the process that can help those who want to maximize their profits.  I have bought and sold over 1000 pieces of glass on eBay.  The following are suggestions for listing your glass:

  1. Pick the correct category.  The category determines how your buyers find your listings.  Be as specific as you can.  (Glassware, Glass, Hocking, Mayfair.)  If you list your glass in Antiques, Collectibles, or Kitchenware, you will limit your exposure to potential buyers.
  2. List your item by manufacturer, item name, pattern, and color.  (HOCKING Mayfair, 13" oblong bowl, pink.)
  3. Edit your picturesFirst, crop to eliminate all extra space.  Second, make sure they are close-up, clear, and show the true color and pattern/design.  Third, the background should be plain--either white or black.  Wood grain, busy patterns, tablecloths, and crochet dollies make it harder to see the glass.  GOOD PICTURES ALWAYS MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN SALES.  Fourth, if re-listing TAKE  NEW PICTURES!  Add NEW interest with NEW pictures.
  4. The best bargain for the most profit when you list on eBay is the GALLERY picture.  I seldom look at anything that does not have a gallery picture.
  5. Detail the description:  This includes the manufacturer, the pattern, the color, the size and especially, the condition.  CONDITION is everything to a glass collector.  Also, include a specific book reference, if available.
  6. Never lie to or try to fool buyers.  It doesn't work.  Buyers are savvy enough to know when a seller is deliberately trying to mislead.
  7. If you want to maximize profit, do your research.  Usually, the more you know AND CAN DISCLOSE about your item, the higher the bidding goes.
  8. Ending day and time-of-day matters.  List for auctions to end on SUNDAY afternoon or evening.  Remember, continental U. S. buyers live in four different time zones.
