Tips for Dressing with Fragrances!

How do you apply perfume?. Instead of applying it as an afterthought as you head out the door, think of it as an essential part of your dress. Perfuming your body in the right places and at the right time assures you get the most from your favorite fragrance. It’s all about directly hitting what are called pulse points – your neck, wrist, behind the knees, navel area, and behind the ears. Therefore, apply perfume before you dress. Ensuring the scent’s contact on your skin's pulse points will 1) cause the scent to better react with the heat of you skin at those points for a subtle, sustained release through your clothing and 2) save your clothing from oily perfume staining – an all too common result of the mistake of applying perfume onto clothing instead of skin.

So keeping the above theory in mind, let’s proceed with some practical and useful tips for getting the most from your investment in your favorite fragrances:
  • Apply only to clean skin.
  • Avoid spraying on clothing (although small amounts on bedding are acceptable if desired).
  • Keep the caps on the perfume bottles closed after you're done using to prevent evaporation.
  • Be patient. A fragrance can change, actually intensifying, with the passage of a few minutes. Don’t overdose because you don’t smell something right away.
  • Keep fragrance bottles away from direct heat and sunlight.
  • Complement your perfume or spray by using its complementary products. For example, the corresponding shower gel, bath oils or body lotion developed for your fragrance, when applied all over your body, really helps to maximize the perfume’s effect. This is called “layering” in the fragrance.
  •  Contrary to what you might be used to, rubbing your wrists together after applying perfume actually counteracts its potency.
  • Reapply Eau de Toilette and Eau de Cologne more frequently as these subsets last only two to three hours. Eau de Parfum  lasts longer, at about four to six hours.
  • Avoid perfume on hair. It was developed after all to react with your skin, not your hair. Some perfumes can actually damage your hair due to the alcohol contain in them.
  • Know your allergies and sensitivities to various substances contained in fragrances, before you apply (and buy, for that matter).
  • Consider that you may not be able to smell your fragrance after awhile as you become accustomed to it. Remembering that, reapply conservatively.
  • Realize that fragrances can smell different on people. This is because everyone’s skin chemistry is a little different, as are their preferences for lotions, deodorant, soaps, and amount of fragrance used. These are all variables that can affect the resulting fragrance.
  • Remember to apply to your pulse points, before you dress.
