Computer viruses are programs disguised or hidden from the user. They can infect computers in many ways. I recommend creating and using a Limited User Account, also known as a 'guest account' to help keep your eBay account and computer safe.
Most home computers provide the user with options for creating limited accounts. Only administrators (computer owner) can create or delete them. These accounts do not have administrative privileges, which means the computer is restricted to only performing relatively 'safe' operations. Such accounts place limits on what files or programs can be successfully installed onto your computer's hard drive. A limited account also restricts the user from changing important system settings.
Using a limited account online can provide you with a substantial degree of online security because it's more difficult for a virus to install itself successfully within a limited account environment. A limited account is like a defensive barrier against incoming viruses, worms, and other malicious software. On the other hand, using an 'Administrative Account' online can be like an open door for a virus.
There are a few drawbacks noticed while working within a limited account environment, but none as serious as getting a virus. You may encounter some of your software programs and games on your computer appearing to not work properly. This is completely normal, and is due to the program having been created for administrator use only. To use the program you'll need to log off your limited account and log onto your primary administrative account. The program should then work and perform normally.
I don't recommend going online using an administrative account even if you have antivirus protection. If you want maximum protection for your computer, I suggest using a limited user account. Online it's wise to always use an internet firewall, and regularly update your antivirus software program.
To create a limited account on a PC running Windows, click the desktop 'Start' button, click 'Control Panel', and select 'User Accounts', click 'Create a New Account' and follow the prompts.
