First and most inportant thing about diets is sinple. You must burn more calories than you consume.
You burn calories by exercising. Now the atkins diet does work i have personaly used it with my wife.
And it is getting more attention lately. If you read the book and do just what it says you will lose weight.
But you have to maintain this diet like a lifestyle. Once you get down to your were you want to be you can start adding thing in that you like but you still have to control and maintain the diet and what it taught you.
