Love reading comics? But feel that your getting too old to be reading them? Friends making fun of your habits? Well no more! Welcome to the idiot's guide to Manga. In this guide you will learn what Manga is, how to read Manga, types of Manga, and what Manga suites you the best. First lesson: What the heck is Manga? If you looked it up in a dictionary, this is what you would find: "Man-ga: (Noun) A japanese genre of comic books, cartoons, and animated films, typically having a science-fiction or fantasy theme and sometimes including violent or sexually explicit material. Compared with Anime." but, because your not the sharpest tool in the shed, heres a simple way of putting it: "Comics for adults." Now you may be saying to yourself "This sounds lame" or "Who can read japanese?" or even "Its still a comic book..." Well guess again! Manga is far from your ordinary comic book. For instance I will use a Manga called "Love Hina" as an example. Love Hina is about a guy who ends up moving to take over his grand-mothers hotel, as he try's to become a student in Tokyo U. To his amassment he finds the hotel has been turned into a girls dorm, and has a few residents. So the struggle begins to live in a girls dorm, trying to become a student at Tokyo U and also not get killed by a few of the girls in the dorm. Love Hina has lots of sexual innuendo, and is only intended for 16 years and up. Regular comics, don't even come close. Second lesson: How am I suppose to read Manga? Backwards staircase. Remember those two words, and you will never have trouble reading Manga. You see the Japanese read from right to left and from the top to the bottom. The english read from left to right and top to bottom. Also in (Almost all) Manga you need to start at the back of the book and read to the front. Most Manga will tell you on the front page that you need to go to the back to start reading. Its a little confusing, but anyone can learn to do it. Third lesson: What kind of Manga are there? LOTS! Hundreds of series of Manga have already been published, and hundreds more are to come. I personally own a few series. All of corse I recommend. Here's a list: "Girls Bravo", "Dears", "Galaxy Angel", "Negima!", "Faeries' Landing", "SGT Frog", "Mahromantic", and "Chronicles Of The Cursed Sword". Of corse there are many more Manga I haven't even begun to speak of, but there are way too many to list. Now your top Manga publisher is TOKYOPOP, but I own a few other Manga's not published by this company. Forth and Final lesson: What kind of Manga is right for me? Depends. What do you like in a book? Action, Adventure, Drama, Comedy, Sci-fi, Fantasy, Horror, Romance? You choose! Of corse some of the art is not always good, but the plot is always there. Stick to what you prefer to read, not what someone tells you to read. The best way to decide if you might like a Manga series is this: 1st Chooses any random Manga, 2nd read the Manga (Just the first book), 3rd review your assessment, and outline your favorite parts Vs. your disliked parts. A word to the wise: "Don't judge a Manga by its cover." Well there's you have it. You are now ready to purchase your first Manga. Manga can be found in most any book store, check the Graphic Novels section. Most Manga cost $9.99 per book, ya not cheap, so make the wise choice, choose carefully!
