The TWENTY-CENT piece is the shortest-lived series of all U.S. coinage! Struck in 90% silver from 1875 to 1878, this sleeper series is finally coming unto its own. Very similar the the Quarter of the day, as both obverses were of the Liberty Seated design. The reverse eagle is similar to the TRADE DOLLAR (struck from 1873 to 1885). Right after the release of this series into circulation, people complained about the similarity to the Quarter (as with the Susan B. Anthony dollar of recent!). The highest mintage, if you can actually call it that is the 1875-S. Struck only from year from the San Francisco mint, the mintage was just over a 1.1 million pieces struck. After the 1875 & 1876 issues, the 1877 & 1878 issues were struck in PROOF ONLY and mostly sold to collectors and none issued for general circulation. They are both RARE with the 1877 mintage being a mere 350 coins struck! The 1878 mintage wasn't much higher, with just 600 coined. Most collectors opt for just one coin for their type set. The Carson City minted the coins for just two years, the 1875 and the very rare 1876. With a reported mintage of 10,000 for the 1876-CC, most were melted at the mint and just a handful made it to circulation. One of the fasinating little known U.S. coin series!
