If you ever wondered what the difference was between a circlet, a relatively newer term by bridal standards, and a tiara, then perhaps I can be of help!
A circlet is commonly worn for unique and ecclectic bridal wear or religious rites. They are also considered a more ritualistic piece of hair jewelry usually worn in ceremonial rites, either religious or wedding/unions/handfastings dating back centuries. They are associated with a more Druidic or Celtic feel and are typically made for the forehead or brow area and tied off in the back so it can rest between the hairline and mid-brow for stabilization. This type of headpiece is catered to more discerning tastes or for those who desire to veer away from the traditional.
The more commonly known tiara is a traditional headpiece which sits on top of the head and usually consists of sticky pearls and glued rhinestones or other glittery adornments. Typically, these are produced in lesser alloys, or base metals, with glass stones, and are namely costume pieces for proms, elegant events and also for weddings.
I think of tiaras for pageants or wedding themes for the more coiffed and conservative look.
Circlets come in all ranges and, from my experience in designing these kinds of headpieces, I find that they are just as elegant but command a presence to them as they are a bit more unusual. A bolder feel for those seeking something less traditional, yet elegant and still classy. I make mine in all sterling silver and semi-precious gemstones, so they are truly 'hair'-looms, if you will. Either way, it's all a matter of preference but perhaps this will clear up any lingering confusion between the two!
