The difference between DCC and analog (regular) engines

Many of our customers ask us what the difference is between DCC and analog or regular engines.  A regular analog engine receives its power and movement commands from the track. If the power is on, it moves, and if you reverse the polarity, it moves the other way. Pretty simple, trains have run that way for years. A DCC engine still receives its power from the track, but its movement commands are transmitted through an embedded chip in the engine. You can have different engines moving at different speeds, or in different directions at the same time, with only one transformer, even if they are on the same track circuit. You can use any track, (nickel silver recommended) but you need a DCC transformer to run a DCC engine in DCC mode. They will work the same as an analog engine if you have an analog transformer, but it is not a practice we recommend.
