I have a laid out the sections of a typical Auction Template. The sections listed correspond to the green section tags in my templates, but other designers may do it differently.
Depending on the the template purchased these sections may be in different places. If you are considering purchasing a custom template most times you can place these sections anywhere you want them.
Header - This is the fancy image at the top of an auction. It will usually say something like "Welcome to My Auction!". This will be the first thing a buyer sees when they scroll down your listing. The beauty of a custom template is that you can have your Ebay ID or Store Name here which adds extra advertising.
Auction Title - This is the descriptive title for your item. I would keep this short and simple, but captivating. You want your buyer to keep scrolling down.
Scrolling Marquee - This is a text message (or image) that moves across your screen. It can move left to right, right to left, side to side or up and down. It can be just text or have a contrasting background color creating a bar. It can also have images in it. A scrolling marquee is a great way to advertise an important aspect of your item or a great sale or promotion you are currently having. It can also just say “Have a great day!”
Item Pictures - Pictures, Pictures, Pictures! Nothing shouts confidence in your item as many many pictures. Your pictures will tell your prospective buyer that you are confident in the quality of your item by showing them every aspect of what they will be getting. Auction templates allow you to place a lot of pictures into your listing thus increasing your chances of a sale.
Image Borders - Your images don’t alway need a border, but many auction templates provide a border around them. This offers a way to draw your buyers eye to your images. You can have your images all within one border or you can have the border surround each image separately. I personally prefer the
pictures within one border if you have a lot of them, but 2 can look great in separate borders.
Description Section - This is the meat of your listing. Describe your item in as much detail as possible. Your buyers want to know as much as possible about the item they will be buying. When you are forming your description try to put yourself into your buyers’ shoes. Try to anticipate any questions you might ask and answer them in your description.
Links - Many auction templates provide a way to add extra links within your listing. Ebay provides many links, but it helps to increase your exposure by placing these links within the body of your listing where the buyer is more likely to click! Remember to carefully review eBay's rules about the links you can use!
eBay's Links Policy
Terms of Sale - This is a very important section of your listing! Be very succinct about your terms. If anything goes wrong with your sale you can fall back on what you posted in your terms.
Borders & Backgrounds - These are usually made using tables within HTML. These are at the heart of your template design. They will create the “feel” of your listing. Whether whimsical, vintage or professional, pick a template that matches you as a seller as well as your item!
I truly hope you have found this guide helpful in your future selling endeavors.
