  It surprises many to find out that baseball cards have been collected since long before Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb or Joe Dimaggio were born. A young Ruth may have found an old trade card in the attic and marveled at its age. A young Ty Cobb may have been given a tobacco card of Cap Anson and wondered who was that old geezer.
   The continuation of the long streaks in collecting baseball cards today fascinates many. In fact, many gifts today involves gifting baseball cards to that special fan or player. In this guide I will provide information that you already may or may not know about baseball cards. In addition, I will also provide a breif history of baseball cards.

 A Concise  history of  the baseball collecting world Baseball cards have been made and collected since the late 1870's. Companies used the popularity of baseball players to sell their products. Nearly all baseball cards contain have some form of advertising. Some cards were given away for free. In the early 20th Century some cards were sold in packs of cigarettes or candy. In the 1950s-70s Topps sold their cards with a stick of gum. Cards have promoted the sale of nearly everything from cheese to underwear to dog food to beer. Today's cards are popular enough that they are sold alone.

    Cards come in all shapes, sizes and designs. Most are about the size of a credit card. Some are smaller than a stamp and some are the size of a poster. Most cards are rectangular, but they can be round, triangular and intricate die-cut shapes. Some cards use primitive printing techniques while many of today's cards contain special foils or finishes to give prism-like effects. Most cards are made out of cardboard, though plastics, metals, leather, cloth and other unusual materials are sometimes used.

    Nobody is one hundred percent sure which was the very first baseball card produced, however the hobby of collecting baseball cards dates from the second half of the 19th century, well over one hundred years ago. Goodwin & Co., maker of Old Judge and Gypsy Queen cigarette brands is believed by many to be the first company to produce baseball cards and other sports cards. The first baseball cards were small by today’s standards, 1-1/2 inches by 2-1/2 inches, and printed on thick cardboard. The Old Judge picture cards were issued from 1886 to 1890 and more than 2000 different baseball cards from that set have been cataloged, not to mention the many cards made for other sports and non sports.

Below are some examples of baseball cards today made out of different material. The fascinating cards are still used in trading all over the world today. Antique baseball cards materialized of cardboard, cotton, and other materials are perfect memorabilias . The first photo below is surrounded by the ornate frame and was in the early 1929's when the card was first published. The vintage card is an example of the special occasion of trading or giving between the fan lovers and the gifters.

Even today many baseball fans ignite to share intrests, chat, critique, credit, speak of memories, and comment on the stats of the players in their free time. If you think about buying a present for your lover, you should think about baseball cards.
