The tradition, window candles go back to colonial times in the US, but were also in other cultures too.  Often used at Christmas in America homes to celebrate the season, candles in years have been left burning to welcome visitors, to announce a birth or to honor an important person.  In other cultures candles were used to show that the family was keep the hearth warm for a loved one who was away.

This is a lovely tradition and with the electric and battery candles that turn on and off during day light hours it is as safe and heart warming way to decor your home for the holiday season, with no open flame these candles can be safe next to curtains.
