The Power of Basil
Basil is one of the most popular and most widely cultivated of all the herbs. It is used as a digestive tea. It will also help get rid of gas - so don't use it just before an important public function!
Just steep a bit - about a teaspoon of dried basil in a cup of hot water. It will calm and soothe and refresh.
Sweet basil is very fragrant. Seeds from basil have an antibacterial agent in them so extracts made from the seeds aid in healing in poultices.
No self respecting tomato sauce goes naked without some basil in it! And of course who can think of pesto without thinking basil? The rich and spicy flavor of basil is a wonderful compliment to many dishes - superb in dishes containing meat such as lamb and veal. It is wonderful with poulty and rice dishes and of course with tomatoes. Try combining it with garlic and lemon for fish dishes.
I grow basil in my garden and dry it. You can grow it on windowsills and have it fresh all winter.
Basil is often added to potpourris and sachets. Lemon basil is great used in this manner. Use basil in herbal baths and basil believe it or not is used commercially in soap and perfumes.
HERBAL BATH INFUSION
Here is a recipe for an herbal bath infusion that is very invigorating and worth the time to make it.
Pour boiling water over 1 cup of dried herbs. Let it steep for half an hour. Then strain off the liquid. That is all there is to it. There is enough here for two baths. So when you are ready to bathe just pour half into the warm bath water. Store the rest in the fridge.
