This book, titled “The Postal History of Iraq” covers all aspects of Iraq’s Postal history up to arrohnd 1955. It is written in the usual manner like all books by Proud and covers following areas:
- General History
- Postal History
- Postal rates
- Airmails
- Stamps and Postal Stationary
- Sovereign Bases
- Post Offices and Postmarks
- Railway Letters
A bit disappointing is the postal rates section as only illustrations of old postal regulations are shown which are very difficult to read. I would have expected that the authors would have gone thru the various lists and tables and present them in a more readable way.
One of the more important parts of the book is the chapter with the postmarks which are illustrated as usual for Proud’s books in a very fine way, valued with a point system; however, the valuations are somehow questionable. Several postmarks are listed but marked with ”N.S.) for Not Seen, this leaves plenty of room for a second revision which I am looking forward.
Also the Overland Mail, an important Part of the postal History of Iraq is only mentioned very briefly.
The Railway letter, my own favorites, covers only 2 pages which are extracts of old Iraq postal announcements and no new research. I would have expected a bit more on that.
