In honor of the 40th anniversary of the series in 2007, the set was re-issued with slightly different graphics. The most significant difference is the phrase "40th ANNIVERSARY COLLECTOR'S EDITION" printed at the top as seen on the right image above. Note how the image has been reversed with his hair parted on different sides. The way to tell which image is correct is to look at the shirt button eyelets. The VHS version
For those not familiar with the premise of the series, The Prisoner chronicles a former British government agent known as "Number 6" after he is imprisoned in an idyllic setting called "The Village" that is filled with cameras tracking his every move. McGoohan is faced with the challenge of maintaining his own identity along with his physical and mental strength while trying to find where he is, who he can trust and if escape is possible. The antagonist is a person called "Number 2" who continually tries to break down The Prisoner using subtrefuge, psychology, drugs and spies. Truly, one of the most cerebral series made for television. To this day, most viewers still don't "get it". Even forty years after the original release the message of "big brother" government is still fresh and timely.
Besides the basic plot of the series, it was a puzzle to many Brits to even know where it was filmed. It is not an elaborate set; it does exist as pictured.
Friends and guests will make surprising comments to you when they see this set on your shelf. Comments will range from "Are you out of your mind" to "I never you were this cool!".
If nothing else, buy it for the opening footage of the Lotus Super 7.
