The “Lions of Iran” Book, 5th. Edition, written and published by Mr. Mehrdad Sadri.

This book, which describes in details the first issue of Iran, the so-called Lions stamps of Iran. It represents a significant change from the previous edition. There is a substantial amount of added information, from all aspects such as characteristics of the stamps, varieties, and history relating to development and usage of each series. The pictures are in black and white; however, some of the forgeries are printed in color. What I understood, there is a color edition also in preparation but not yet pout.
The section on Essays and Labels has been updated with new information. The section on reprints is enhanced with many new examples of sheets. The section on forgeries is also expanded to cover newly discovered forgery types. Prices have also been added for the first time in this book, reflecting the latest transactions, including auctions and private sales.
It is spiral bounded so the book will last much longer and lays flat much easier. The quality of the print is excellent and this is very important since a clear illustration is essential. It appears to have been printed on high quality color laser printer on coated paper.
Prices have been added for all items. For almost all items prices are given for:
The book goes through every lion issue, including the Riester Essay, Lion labels and Barre Specimens with meticulous detail and excellent illustrations. For a good measure, an introduction to the foundation of the Postal System in Iran is added. Other Lion books describe the 4 cliché types for each denomination, but here besides those, we get excellent reference on the re-engraved 1kr/1t stamps as well as the 4kr blue and 5kt stamps which are different than the original cliché types.
The second chapter is devoted to the Boital Reproduction (Paris Reprints) which is by far the most detailed study of these reprint/forgeries I have seen. Every denomination/color/paper/perforation is described with key characteristics to help identify them.
The third section starts with extremely handy quick reference guide to various forgery types and is then followed by detail description of each and characteristics to help identify them. Many new forgery types as well as new denomination/color type of previously recorded forgeries are added. I think the quick reference guide alone is worth the price of this book!
Iranian Philately has come a long way over the last few years with several major publications as well as several others in the works. It is refreshing to see that a work such as this can still go through a major update. It goes to show the field is still ready for scholarly work and research.
This book is an essential tool for anyone interested in the Lion issues of Iran, either an advanced collector or a beginner.
