My New Obsession is Lady Liberty in a Head-Dress.  ..... One of America's most beloved coins.

Heave you ever held an uncirculated bright red Indian Head Cent?  Well if you have then you know the feeling it gives to the collector.  This series is my new obsession so I thought I would share some history with you.

Designed by James B. Longacre, this penny was first minted in 1859 and had a long mintage life through 1909.  Prior to the issuance of the five cent nickel coins these were referred to as Nicks. or Nickels and later were called White Cents.

This coin series was a tribute piece to the native American inhabitants.  Tradition has it that designer Longacre fashioned the face of Lady Liberty after his daughter, Sarah, who was visiting the Mint while an Indian Chief was being welcomed at the facility.  The Chief placed his elaborate head-dress on the little girl when Longacre sketched her portrait that would later be used in his design.

This is a great looking coin with alot of history and the series can be put together with a little hard work and tons of fun.  Most pieces from 1859 to 1886 can be picked up from $10 to $50.  The 1877 Indian Cent is the key date and trends from $600 in Good condition to over $4000 in an Uncirculated state.  Coins from 1887 to 1909 can be bought for $4 in Good condition to over $300 in Uncirculated condition.  the 1909 - S issuance is considered more rare and commands a premium of $350 to $1000.

Some key varieties that command premium prices are:

1869 9 over 9, were the number 9 was struck over the original 9

1873 Doubled Liberty, this variety has the word Liberty doubled in the head-dress

Indian head cents were minted at the Philladelphia Mint, except for the 1909 - S which was minted at the San Fransisco Mint.

Ok, so you now know some history and facts...... Now go collect!

Have fun and thanks for your vote on this guide.
