How to Spot a FAKE Hermes Tie!

I am first and foremost an Hermes Tie Collector! I have more than 300 Authentic Hermes Ties in My Personal Collection. I also happen to be a large volume Ebay Power Seller of Authentic Hermes Men's Ties having bought or sold over 5000 Hermes Ties on Ebay over the past few years. It drives me crazy to see the number of Knock-Off (FAKE) Hermes Ties being sold on Ebay each and Every Day!These anxieties have pushed me into writing this guide in hopes that we can Clean Up Ebay form these cheap knock-off Fakes, and protect the true value of this wonderful exclusive product!

Here are a few points to be aware of when shopping online for an Hermes Tie:

  • ALL Hermes Ties are carefully silk screened onto one of the finest silks available in the world... Watch out for edgey patterns and "Shiney" silks... Hermes Silk Screen Process provides an almost muted finish to the silk, which is distinguishable as "Soft"  to the touch.

  • The Silk on an Authentic Hermes Tie will have the soft ridge twill bias running in the same direction on every figural tie! The soft fabric silk ridges will run from about 11:00 O'Clock down to 5:00 O'Clock on a slight Diagonal. Many Fakes have ridges running from side to side or up and down. This one below is Fake with the ridges running form side to side.

  • The Interior Lining of an Authentic Hermes Tie will MATCH the primary Background Color of the Front Pattern. It will NEVER be Black, and only in rare instances will it have embroidered H's... this is reserved for the Embroidered H pattern Hermes Ties. This one below is a Fake!

  • The MOST TELL-TALE Sign in spotting a Fake Hermes is to gently peel back the delicate folds on the back of the wide end of the tie. Here you SHOULD see a small thread loop approximately 1/2" to 1" Long piercing through the silk of the tie. Hermes is the ONLY Tie Maker in the World to utilze a Single Thread Stitch from end to end in their ties. The Thread ends in this small loop inside the back folds of the tie, and can be used to sinch up the seam should it become loose over time. IF your tie has a heavy stitch closing the back of the tie with no thread in siight, it is surely a Fake!

  • The Tie Stay on the back of the tie is ALWAYS Embroidered with The Hermes Horse & Carriage Logo... NEVER... will the words "Hermes Paris" appear under the Horse & Carriage, unless you are purchasing a Scarf Pattern Tie. ONLY the Scarf Pattern Ties will have the words present. Figural ties will NEVER have the words on the tie stay. This one left is fake, while the one on the right is correct.

  • Authentic Hermes Ties will NEVER have a Second Tie Stay made of the fabric... Some FAKES will have this second stay.

  • Authentic Hermes Ties will NEVER Watermark the silk on the front pattern of the tie. This has been a new development in recent Fakes on Ebay, and looks very odd to begin with.

  • ALL Authentic Hermes Ties have an Alpha-Numeric Code approximately 5" up fom the small point end of the tie. This Code will consist of a three or four digit Number that denotes he pattern code, followed by two Letters that denote the design factory (SA, FA, HA, OA, PA, TA, EA, IA, MA, or UA.) The Color of the Box that encloses the code will generally match with a color from the front figural pattern, and it will ALWAYS contain the words: "MADE IN FRANCE" above the code and "100% SOIE" below the code. The letters are always CAPITALIZED. This is what is SHOULD look like....

  •

  • Watch out for "New in The Box" Hermes Listings unless they are from a reputable dealer! First of all... These ties are $145.00 plus Tax when NEW! If a "New" listing is starting at $20.00... beware! Hermes Does NOT EVER Discount their Product. It is not something you will ever find at TJ Max or another close-out store.

  • Finally... When you are looking at "New in The Box", keep in mind that Hermes ONLY Uses a Heavy Guage, Acid Free Off-White Tissue Paper. When you see Hermes Logo Tissue Paper, it is a tell tale sign the tie is a fake!

Anyway, I hope this information has been helpful to you! The bottom line is this... Look for Reputable Sellers who have a passion for their merchandise! There are dozens of reputable Hermes Tie Sellers on ebay, and yes, some are even based in Asia! Look at the feedback... realize that if someone has 1000+ Positive Postings, and 1500+ Total Positive Postings, that means they have had 500 Repeat Customers!
