I am the typical Southern Belle of gardens I plant all types of vegatables that my family or I don't even like. I guess that I plant them just to see them grow. Some things that I have learned along the way include using banana peels, eggs shells, and your fish tank water to water the plants, make them actually grow faster. This works with flowers also. I also use panty hose to store onions for the winter, by dropping them in the hose and tying knots above each onion, then all you have to do is just cut one off when you need an onion. Another good use of old panty hose is to put melons in them and tie the to a stake to keep them off the ground it prevent animals from getting to them.
