Here are my thoughts on what I believe are the greatest jazz recordings of all time. Most of these are still available on CD's, some may be available in vinyl only (keep scouring eBay for those). Let me know what your favorites are. In no particular order, mine are:
1. Kind of Blue - Miles Davis. Probably the first album that comes to mind, the music is both haunting and exhilarating.
2. Live at the Showboat - Phil Woods Quartet. The greatest set of songs, including some Irving Berlin greats, by the greatest living alto.
3. The Sounds of '66 - Sammy Davis Jr. and Buddy Rich Band. Recorded in the wee hours in Vegas, an unforgettable live album by two greats.
4. Ella & Duke at the Cote D'azur - Memorable live outing, the band swings and Ella sings! Oh, and yes, Trombonio Bustoso Issimo and Buster Cooper!!!!!
5. Road Father - Woody Herman - Worth the listen for "Fire Dance", played by Allen Vizzutti.
6. Impromptu - June Christy with Lou Levy. The great singer still has chops after all these years. Marvelous to listen to.
7. Trio - Oscar Peterson. Joe Pass and the great Niels Orsted Pederson, doesn't get much better than this.
8. Salt and Pepper, Sonny Stitt and Paul Gonsalves. The sweet sounding "Stardust" is worth the price of admission.
9. Giant Steps - John Coltrane. What more can I say.
10. Live at Jimmy's - Maynard Ferguson. We used to put this on in college and jam with MacArthur Park. Just play it loud !
