I am born in Switzerland and I grew up in a town on countryside of Zurich. My first Sasha doll was a course Sasha made in the 1960's in a course under the supervision of Sasha Morgenthaler . The doll had blonde hemp hair and it was looking like the "Struwelpeter" ,her dress was dirty and her clothes were made from cotton in very bright colors, .... it was simply ugly !
I loved Antiques , but very soon a bisque doll catched my eyes,it was 1976 and the beginning to a successful antique doll business ! In the 1980's the name Sasha becames very popular and doll collectors were looking for Studio Sasha dolls.Sasha Morgenthaler was well know at that time , she displayed her dolls at the "Heimatwerk" ( A Swiss store which is selling Swiss Folk Art , most of them handmade , it's still exist today ) also some News Paper honored her as a very talented artist. I bought and sold many Sasha's at that time , a very expensive affair !
I had a very rare Sasha doll , the famous "Anker-Boy" ,a Sasha doll made after a famous Swiss Artist painting: Albert Anker , doll Price : $ 10,000.00
All Studio Sasha dolls with a special outfit , like the "Ski-dress and accessories, were more expensive than the girls with the simply cotton dresses
In 1986 when the english Sasha doll Production closed their factory, couple years later , collectors began with a research for the Sasha's and were looking for the dolls from the past , especially for the "Goetz" Sasha's , in fact, these doll reached very soon astronomic prices , for example:
Prices ranges approximately for the Vinyl Dolls after 1965:
1992 : Goetz Sashas $ 900.00 to 1500.00 Goetz with the SCOUT UNIFORM $ 2000.00
Limited Edition Dolls : $ 1600.00,Kiltie $ 2200.00
I also met the "Blaser-Sisters " living in suburban Bern , both were helping Sasha Morgenthaler in home work , making the Sasha dresses and undergarments , the sister were both doll cllector's too , one had love with the antique bisque dolls and the older one , married to a Veterinarian , has collected Kaethe Kruse - and Sasha dolls.
The Studio Sasha doll with cloth body
these kind dolls are normally unmarked , size is little various, from 19" to 21 " as the bodies are stuffed , it could be that some legs are little longer than others
made in the 1950's , this dolls has a swivel head on shoulder plate, attached under the cloth on body , head is made from Gypsum and has a handmade human hair wig , painted facial features , very unusual : the doll above with the face typ lV has on top of head marked " 4" , this face type is harder to find than tpe Nr. l or lll , Gypsum head dolls made in the 50's are coming with body type B , different skin tone found : very light and also darker skin tone.... one is as good as other , as the collector choose what is missing in his collection or having different Sasha types !
The Studio Sasha Gypsum doll
She is heavier than all other Sasha dolls . Made from Gypsum , has a swivel head , well modeled , different face type are know on this type doll, the mold above is the face typ lll , she has a human hair wig , handknotted , she is on a five piece body with jointed arms and legs , marked on foot with the year and mold type , she wears her typical cotton undergarments , a wool dress , and the handknitted socks and very unusual sandals ! she also has an old straw hat. A very pretty doll with a light skin tone !
The Studio Sasha Vinyl ( synthetic materials ) Doll.
In the 1960's , Sasha Morgenthaler used a new formula for making dolls which could used more for playing , a stable synthetic materials , made like the "all Gypsum " dolls , a swivel head on a five piece body with straight legs , painted facial features , handmade human hair wig , handmade clothing and undergarments , knitted socks and leather shoes , marked on foot : production year and her signature ( may have only signature)
The synthetic materials , called Vinyl or polymer , wasn't as good as Sasha Morgenthaler thought , the finish on these dolls became a very ugly skin tone in a slightly green color , well preserved dolls are looking better and are just a little powdered on head ( hair top also ) and body.... I also saw a Vinyl Sasha in terrible condition : with a peeling all over head and body , also a try to shave the doll's peeling brought nothing , this doll was lost forever !
The Rarest of the Studio Sasha Doll : over 8 pounds Baby !
This cutie is very , very heavy ! It is maybe to compare to the Martha Chase Hospital baby , but it's unknow if Sasha Morgenthaler made this baby for learning how to handle with a real Baby , I don't think so ...... however .. what is well know that just a very few examples are made : one type as a girl with sparse human hair wig like a baby and another baby is made with molded and painted hair as a boy ... these dolls are not sexed !
the baby above has a swivel head with molded and painted hair , painted facial features , a five piece baby body ,with a naval ..
I have no idea , in which kind of clothes Sasha Morgenthaler dressed the Babies , I had to redressed them and the smallest size clothes for newborn babies are fitting well to them !
Both of the babies were unmarked !
