The Clock on your Cell Phone isn't Enough for Travelers
Executive summary: You need a wristwatch when you travel.
I was recently talking with a colleague at a conference and mentioned how my primary market is shrinking. Many people have stopped wearing watches in favor of using the clock on their cell phones.
Here are the disadvantages of relying solely on a cell-phone while traveling:
- The cell phone in a holster/bag and your hands are full
- The cell phone can be lost/left at the Security Checkpoint
- The cell phone needs re-charging mid-trip (sometimes daily)
- When you change time-zones the cell phone's clock setting function is 4 menus away
- If your plane is stuck on the tarmac or in a holding pattern for landing, you are prohibited from having your cell phone turned on. Not knowing the time can make the waiting even harder to endure
Here are some advantages of having a digital wristwatch with you for traveling:
- You can sneak a look at your wrist virtually anytime
- Many digital watches can be set with a second time zone. Even if they don't have that, it is usually very easy to only change the hour (leaving the minutes accurate)
- It rarely will need to come off for security screening
- Batteries typically last for 2-years or more
- Atomic models are available, so they can keep themselves accurate in between times you need them
- Flight attendants will not ask you to turn off your watch for take-off or landing
Some suggestions for selecting a watch that will be a good travel partner:
- Start with comfort and style
- Consider a resin or fabric band instead of a metal-link variety. This will be more comfortable if you aren't used to regularly wearing a wristwatch.
- Will the style fit-in with your planned activities? Do you need a basic color scheme that can do anything, or is this a vacation and a vibrant color will add to your fun?
- Although analog watches are proven to be quicker to read and interpret, digital models are typically easier to travel with. If moving between time zones, you only need to update the hour field.
- Make sure it is water resistant to at least 50 meters for general use and 100-200 meters if you'll be in the water with it.
- If you are into specific sports, consider a model tailored to those needs. For example there are models that will help you keep score on the golf course.
- Finally, consider your budget. If you will only use this watch for travel, set your sights on something that will cost less than $60 delivered. There are plenty of good options in this range.
Here are three models to consider:
1) Timex 5G341 – This is a unisex Atomic model with a fabric band that uses a hook and loop fastener (Velcro style). Since this uses a radio signal each night to set itself you will rarely have to think about setting it. It can even detect when Daylight Saving Time starts or ends and automatically make that adjustment.
2) Timex 5B721 – This woman's model is light and comfortable and the playful blue color is perfect for vacations.
3) Timex 5F821 – This men's model is shock resistant and it includes a golf score mode. There are also mid-sized versions available for men with smaller wrists or for women.
Thank you for taking the time to look at this guide. As always I would appreciate a "Helpful" vote to let me know this was a good read.
