Is the 2000 Edge Supreme Tom Brady Rookie Card
The Best Kept Secret in Brady Rookies?
Maybe.
By now, every breathing human knows that Tom Brady rose from being a sixth round (199th overall) draft pick to being the most celebrated quarterback in the league. Brady may in fact become the most successful quarterback in history with a bright future and stacked team all around him season after season. But because Brady was a late, late round draft pick he has very few rookie cards compared to the first round picks. Hardly any of the major manufacturers had him in their 2000 sets so compared to fellow draftee Chad Pennington, Brady has very few rooks.
The combination of his enormous Super Bowl success and popularity and the shortage of rookies out there have created a constant frenzy for his RCs. Even brands that don't normally sell for much (Impact, Bowman, Press Pass, etc.) move for $5-20 ungraded. Brady's 2001 Playoff Contenders rookie is pushing $1,000 as a PSA 9 and the 2001 SP Authentic is around $700 ungraded as of this writing. Stellar prices indeed.
But perhaps the best value in Tom Brady rookies is the 2000 Edge Supreme Tom Brady rookie card (pictured above) which is machine numbered to just 2000 made. Just 2000.
This is an incredibly low number for a Brady rookie as again, he has very few rookie cards. This means that the 'float' of overall Brady rookies is very low and that buyers must choose from this tiny population. Supply does not meet demand which explains why Press Pass cards sell for $5-10 and the 2001 SP Authentic, which is neither a patch nor autographed card, sells for $700+ ungraded even though it is limited to 1250 cards produced.
So, using the 2001 SP Authentic as a baseline, one must wonder why the 2000 Edge Supreme Brady sells for less than $400, let alone the sub-$50 pricing seen currently on eBay? Shouldn't the card be somewhere around 75% the value of the SP Authentic? Neither card is autographed or game used in any way, so in reality its value is only in its rarity.... numerically speaking.
1250 Brady SP Authentics = $700 Ungraded
2000 Brady Edge Supreme = Less than $50.
Common sense says that the current card prices are based more on Upper Deck's big 'ole marketing program and brand name recognition. But numbers usually win out over time and in our estimation the NFL licensed 200 Tom Brady Edge Supreme Rookie Card is one of the best buys in trading cards EVER. And keep in mind that many of the hobby's most valuable cards are items that were overlooked early on, only to be fully appreciated later (See Honus Wagner T-206) as an example.)
