Theres no doubt about it when it comes to Barber coinage ........either you love 'em or you hate 'em ,there seems to be no middle ground. The year 1892 , as with the other denominations , began the barber dime series , this writer personally feels that, this design seems to fit better on the dime than the other denomonations, perhaps chief designer , Charles Barber should have considered other designs for the larger denominations , as Barber was a very talented artist, and maybe adapting the George T. Morgan design for the quarter and half dollar would have been more viable ( there were many patterns to this end, none saw production though .) In collecting the barber dime series ( as i do ) , one will find a few expensive "road blocks "in the way of a complete collection . Obviously , the 1894-S, with a proof only mintage of just 24 pieces , and a million plus dollar price tag, is out of reach of even some of the hobby's most elite collectors. The next "stopper" as i like to refer to them as , is the 1895-O , the good-4 trend on this piece is $400.00, not a fortune, but expensive to the average collector ( something to bear in mind , with the huge popularity of barber coinage, the key dates very often sell above trend, sometimes , significantly higher ) in fact, all of the 1895 coinage are better dates , the 1895-P trends 85.00 in G-4, and the 1895-S comes in at 50.00 in G-4 . The 1896 -O, and 1896-S are also better dates with trends in G-4 at 80.00 each. After 1896 though, the series really gets affordable , with the F-12 average ( with some notable exceptions ) being under 20.00 per coin , with still many in grades VF-20 under 20.00 each . the barber dime, a beautiful series to collect . !!!
