Pick the Right Scent:

1) Use the cards, not your wrists: Those little cards next to cologne aren’t left so you can give the sales clerk your number. Spraying cologne on your wrists is not the most effective way to evaluate a scent, especially if you are trying several fragrances. The cards provide an unaltered environment for the fragrance so you can capture the true scent.

Spay the cologne on the card and give it a whiff. Try to limit your test selections to four colognes so you don’t fell overwhelmed. As you sniff each card, think about the smell. Is it sporty, outdoorsy, trendy, etc. Does the scent remind you of an event, place, or personal characteristic? Hold on to the cards.

2) Give ‘em another whiff: Give the cards another whiff in another 5 or 10 minutes. Ask yourself if any of the fragrances smell different now. How does the Armani Code differ from the Calvin Klein Eternity? Is Polo Black you new favorite scent? What are you now thinking about the Jean Paul Gaultier? Place the cards in order from most favorite to least favorite.

3) Eliminate Two and Select a Purpose: Drop your two least favorite scents in the garbage. Like clothing, certain colognes should be worn at certain functions. Think about when you would most likely wear the cologne. Are you planning on wearing it to work? Is the cologne something you’d wear on a date or at a special event? Figure out what cologne captures the event. If you’d like to make your selection easier just buy the two remaining fragrances.

Rule #1: Water is for Showering: Cologne should be something people next to you smell. You’re co-worker down the hall should not smell Hugo Boss all day long. Carefully spray cologne on your wrists and neck. Body heat and pressure points will help disperse the scent all day long.

Rule# 2: Spray in Advance: Ideally, put cologne on 15-20 minutes before leaving your house or attending your function. Cologne can be very strong in its first few minutes on your skin.
