The stitches in Hawaiian quilts reflect tropical motifs that are significant in Hawaiian culture.  Examples might include silhouettes of fruit & vegetables such as pineapple or breadfruit; island flowers like the orchid or hibiscus; or favorite animals like the dolphin or turtle.

Hawaiians first learned to quilt after the arrival of missionaries to the islands in the early 19th century.  They were taught to use pieces of remnant or scrap fabric to stitch in the traditional patchwork style.  However, Hawaiians didn't have a reserve of fabrics to use for quilt squares.  As a result, the Hawaiian quilt evolved into a coverlet unlike any other!  Quilting became a medium for Hawaiians to express their talents.  Some quilts recorded a family's geneology, documented an event, or contained items of significance to the quilter.  So much of Hawaiian culture, tradition and religion are preserved in the art of Hawaiian quilting.

Today, Hawaii museums, art galleries and hotels showcase the artistry of Hawaiian quilts.

Advice to the beginner:  start small, like with a pillow.  The goal is to have smooth and consistent stitches.  Museum-quality Hawaiian quilts boast 10 stitches per inch and a full-size coverlet can take up to 500 hours to complete.  Price tags on such quilts are over $5,000.

Whether you learn the Hawaiian style of quilting or simply admire it, Hawaiian quilting is distinctive in its method, history and meaning.

If you are interested in Hawaiian Quilting or other Hawaiian Crafts, you don't have to go to Hawaii!  Many Islanders now offer their wares and craft supplies on eBay.  We'll bring the islands to you wherever you may be and we'll be sure to send our products with lots of aloha!
