A Logical, Proven Progression for Teaching Safe and Effective Nordic Walking in the USA

When a series of running injuries ended former marathon runner Pete Edwards’s running career, Nordic Ski Walking saved the day. Edwards discovered firsthand how walking with the correct length poles radically reduces the stresses of walking and running. He also discovered how Nordic Ski Walking turbo-charges a walking campaign by burning more calories and working more muscle groups than regular walking.

He found that using the correct length poles helps us automatically walk with a straight back—a biomechanically healthy thing. This improved walking posture, when combined with the unique 4-Wheel-Drive-type action of walking with poles, reduces stress to shins, knees, hips and back.

Edwards’s enthusiasm for this new fitness activity led him to launch SkiWalking.com and he began hosting Nordic Ski Walking Clinics across the country from Lake Tahoe to the White Mountains. He realized that one-piece poles are safer, lighter and much more durable than twist-locking poles that are adjustable in length. His special Nordic Walking Poles are custom made in Lillehammer, Norway, exclusively for SkiWalking.com and all customers receive a perfect length guarantee.

Edwards notes that skiers don’t use twist-locking poles and hundreds of backpackers have had severe falls when their twist-locking telescoping poles collapsed unexpectedly. Edwards also found that twist-locking poles vibrate and rattle. For silent sport enthusiasts one-piece poles are the answer.

Edwards soon discovered that Nordic Ski Walking is ideal for all ages and all fitness levels. He developed a successful teaching progression and the 3 Levels of Nordic Ski Walking—The American Nordic Walking System. Most Americans prefer Level 1—casual, but effective walking with poles. Level 2 involves a full arm extension and Level 3 a full arm extension combined with a hard pole plant and resistance/pressure applied into the comfortable patented straps that real Nordic Walking poles are equipped with. Level 1 burns about 20% more calories than regular walking. Level 2 burns about 30% more. Level 3 burns about 40% more.

Climbing hills is a breeze with poles and no special technique change is required. The poles are knee savers on downhills too—absorbing stress and eliminating knee pain. The American Nordic Walking System provides special teaching instructions for individuals with balance issues, including MS and Parkinson’s. The American Nordic Walking System never recommends leaning forward or sitting back when Nordic Ski Walking—take total advantage of the improved biomechanics provided from correctly fitted poles.

Edwards will launch a new teaching DVD later this summer—highlighting the effective learning progression offered by The American Nordic Walking System. This new Nordic Walking DVD will be included with all SkiWalking.com poles and retail separately for $29.95.

According to Nick Mahood, SWIX Nordic Walking Director, "Pete Edwards, SkiWalking.com's owner/founder/coach, has single handedly introduced thousands of Americans to Nordic Walking. I have no doubt that Edwards is the #1 retailer of Nordic Walking Poles in the USA."
