The Amazing Chickadee
The birds need your help more in the winter than the spring. They need the seed to have the energy to survive the cold nights and fresh water for bathing to help the create the necessary oils on thier feathres to retain the heat that thier bodys create. Take the Amazing Chickadee for instance.
The chickadee can gain 7-11% of body weight each day and lose that same weight during a long winter night, so providing them with seed or suet helps them gain the weight they need to survive in the winter.
They can enter a torpid condition on cold nights that drops their body temperature 20 degrees, as their pulse and breathing shows a 30% drop. So feeding them in the winter time really helps keep their temperature higher while in that torpid state.
They can remember where they found food 8 months later and is likely to be the 1st bird on a new feeder. Therefore feeding them in the winter time will help ensure you have them in the spring, and summer.
