When buying cosmetics on ebaY, you may see the terms "tester" "overstock" and "discontinued". I have written this to help you understand the technical differences.
Cosmetics "testers" are new, unboxed product that is sent to the counter specifically to be used or 'tested' by the customers in the store. It is generally the same product that is offered for sale. Sometimes these are marked with a 'tester' sticker to discourage theft. Testers are never offered for sale, so use caution when an item on ebaY is listed as a Tester. The term by itself is confusing as it implies that an item has been "tested" (used). If an item has a tester sticker, that should be mentioned in the listing, but often there is no tester label. Most important is to make sure the 'tester' is new and untouched before you buy.
"Overstock" is excess quantity of product, that is generally slower moving items. More quantity is available than what is needed at the time. Overstock items may or may not have been packed in individual unit cartons for retail.
If an item sells too slowly, it might me "discontinued", and new batches of that product will no longer be made. If you can't locate the item on the retail shelves or on the brand's internet sites, the item is most likely discontinued. Don't be too concerned about this. In the cosmetics industry there is lots of discontinued shades due to the colors that are produced just for a season, spring, fall, summer, etc.
Most cosmetics have long shelf lives. Powder blushes and eye shadows will last the longest and are the safest bets for freshness. Lipstick can turn waxy smelling. Eyeliner and mascara can dry out. And foundations will begin to separate. Look out for any of these symptoms when you receive your items.
Happy ebaYing !!
