Tanzanite is without doubt the most exciting gemstone that is currently available in the market place. The genuine rarity of this stone and the huge increase in demand as India and China begin to covet the things that we love means that the stone will be mined to extinction within 5-15 years. The Tanzanite Authority make some good points regarding this question. Although inventory estimates can be made by geologists in Tanzania (the onlyplacewhere this stone grows) no accurate estimate can be made in regards to the predicted increase in demand for this stone.
In May 2007 wholesale prices for Tanzanite jumped by 20% and Ebayers now must pay $700 plus per carat for top quality goods normally. Bargains are still to be had on 1$ no reserve as dealers genuinely lose on such auctions just using them to draw traffic into their store. Many dealers are now finding it hard to source stones and have pushed their prices even higher.
Prices are expected to hit the $1000 per carat mark this year on Ebay. In Kuala Lumpur, England and Singapore we can already easily find retailers selling for $1500 and $2000 per carat.
Large stones as of May 2007 are in very short supply currently and stones over 20 carat are in great demand.
