TIME FOR THYME: A Guide to Herbal Seasoning
So you don't know what that soup or stew needs but you feel it needs "something'? It's time for thyme. Thyme is a multipurpose, almost and all purpose herb. It was and still is used for a tea and to flavor liqueurs. The tea especially was thought to cure a multitude of maladies. It grows wild here in the United States. Of course you can grwo it in your garden too and it makes a wonderful windowsill plant.
You will find thyme in cough syrups. Thyme is only used in moderation these days as a medicinal. Large doses can be toxic.
CULINARY USES:
Any meat benefits from the use of thyme for seasoning. It makes a very nice herbed vinegar and is delicious with a variety of vegetables. I use it liberally on rice in most of my rice dishes. Use the flowers and leaves in sachets in drawers. They will smell heavenly.
There are different flavors of thyme such as lemon. You will find this herb all year in the stores as dried leaves. You can of course, grow your own in the garden or on the windowsill. If you plan to grow it, find the variety of thyme that is the easiest to grow which is called common thyme. Once it has established it requires little care. If you are wanting to attract bees to the garden thyme will do this for you!
