This a very short piece on how to tell a antique bottle from a reproduction.  FIRST look on the bottom of what you believe to be an "OLD" or an ANTIQUE. IF YOU SEE,WHEATON or WHEATON N. J.,TAIWAN or CROWNFORD etc. then you have a "NEW" or a REPRODUCTION BOTTLE. Understand that some of these bottles made by afore mentioned companies can not always be called a "REPRODUCTION" because a REPRO.{TERM USED FOR REPRODUCTION} has to have had a older bottle that is a copy. Many of the bottles ,especially the WHEATON AND TAIWAN make "FATASY BOTTLES' in other words bottles that are made to look old ,but never existed as an ANTIQUE BOTTLE.I HAVE A PRETTY "WHEATON" that is purple, about 4inches high, and is a colonial looking soldier in uniform, holding a rifle.Very CUTE ,BUT THERE WAS NEVER AN ANTIQUE BOTTLE LIKE THIS! THE TAIWAN bottles are similer in that they are mostly all fantasy bottles. Now CROWNFORD is a different story ! They make copies of actual bottles that their are ANTIQUE examples of,but they are pretty easy to spot as reproductions ,because they come in colors that the original were not or very rarely made in. A while back I tried to kindly tell a seller on ebay that the bottle they were selling was a REPRO. not only because it was listed as made by CROWNFORD ,but the bottle was SOLID YELLOW AND IF WAS A TRUE ANTIQUE BOTTLE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN WORTH A FEW HUNDRED DOLLARS ,WHERE AS A REGULAR AMBER ONE OF THESE IS WORTH $50 and under. THE person listed what I said ,but persisted it was an old bottle.I don't think the person was dishonest it is just we have a hard time not wanting to believe what we have is not as good as we want it to be. With all this said there is nothing wrong collecting these bottles .Some do.THEY ARE COOL LOOKING. JUST remember never give over $10 for any of these bottles unless you just have to have it and don't mind over paying to get it. THERE ARE OTHER REPRODUCTIONS OUT THERE ,BUT IT WOULD TAKE A BOOK TO REALLY GET INTO IT. JUST REMEMBER IF ON THE BOTTOM OF A BOTTLE IF IT READS WHEATON OR WHEATON N.J.,TAIWAN, OR CROWNFORD[ CROWNFORD or CROWNFORD CHINA CO.,JUST REMEMBER CROWNFORD] THEN IT IS A NEWER BOTTLE[1970s up on taiwan or wheaton 60s or so for CROWNFORD]OR A REPRODUCTION.HOPE THIS HELPS YOU OUT AND ALWAYS ASK WHAT IT SAYS ON THE BOTTOM IF IN DOUBT ! GOOD COLLECTING TO ALL! JAMIE LINDSEY
