Spring and Summer 2008 is all about looking like a lady and oh so feminine. Looking pretty is back, thank goodness! This year American Fashion Designers have continued framing the perfect fall and winter fashions with feminine clothing. The feeling has been exemplified by collections inspired by visions of Catherine Deneuve taking a black tie event by storm. Fabulous!
Top Ten Looks...
- ROMANCE ROCKS:Show off your feminine side with soft florals (yes, for Fall!), ruffles and velvets. Wear It: The romantic looks works best worn in small doses: a ruffled blouse paired with a menswear suit or a soft floral dress grounded with a leather belt and pumps.
- MILITARY JACKETS:Pop on a multi-buttoned military jacket or coat this season to add structure and natty tailoring. Wear It: Military jackets are usually fitted, so pair with wide-leg pants for a fitted-over-loose silhouette. Longer military coats go with everything, just watch the placement of the buttons (loads of button on a full or top-heavy figure will just accentuate the problem).
- WAIST MAKERS:Designers reworked classic fall layers with a waist-defining belt (especially a skinny belt) this season. Wear It: A thin belt is a perfect way to ground all of those ruffled and bowed looks for fall; it is also a polished way to top off a cardigan or jacket. Although skinny belts are hot, not many women can carry off this look. Try a belt that's about 1 or 2 inches wide for a more figure-friendly look.
- BLUE HUES:Blue -- in hues ranging from slate blue to electric blue -- is the color of the season. Wear It: Choose an intensity that compliments your coloring if you are wearing it close to the face (i.e. softer blues for fair skin, intense blue for darker coloring). Blue mixes beautifully with grays (another great fall color), purples, even black.
- A HAT HEAD?:When was the last time you wore a hat for fun, not to just protect against the elements? This season hats are the finishing accessory for everything from capelets to turtlenecks. Wear It: Try one of the shaped wool hats in face-flattering shapes like the fedora and wide-brimmed looks. Although on youngsters the fedora looks adorable with jeans and T-shirts, it's a better look to try a structured wool hat with something classic like a black pantsuit.
- THE BIG BAG ACCESSORY: Why not dress up your luggage or current oversized bag with fun fashion tags. They are super affordable and can completely change an old look - quite stunning. And then there is the bag. Against a backdrop of soft, romantic clothing, the best new handbags add structure and texture to the mix without losing their femininity. Watch for gathers, ruffles and ruching on bags, as well as belt details. Wear It: Work with the law of opposites when it comes to pairing bold bags with outfits: the simpler the clothing, the more adventuresome the bag can get and vice versa.
- PRETTY IN PLAID:This season designers fell in love with all types of plaid and other bold menswear prints. Wear It: Bold plaids and checks work great for wraps, coats, jackets and scarves when paired with a solid, dark color bottom. You won't need to accessorize a big plaid -- the print takes center stage.
- VIVA LE VEST!The menswear vest -- whether worn open over a floral print, like here at Diane von Furstenberg -- or buttoned up is a great layered look that anyone can wear. Wear It: Monochromatic vests and shirts are chic and slimming; hip-length vests or shorter can be worn unbuttoned over everything from floaty prints to sweaters. For a very chic new look, try an unbuttoned vest belted with a skinny belt.
- THE STATEMENT NECKLACE:The perfect accessory for those tunic-length tops, sweaters and dresses? The statement necklace. Wear It: Go long and bold over chunky knits, scale the pendant down to wear in open necklines. Look for everything from bold plastic shapes (chain, oval, etc.) to metal pieces to classic pearls.
- OH BOW:From sweet little bowed blouses to huge novelty bows, this girly look is one you'll want to try for fall. Wear It: The oversized bow works great for eveningwear, like on this Michael Kors evening dress. Soft bow blouses are one of fall's biggest trends and you'll love how they work under jackets, cardigans and vests..
Hope these look ideas have helped. Remember...you don't have to spend a million bucks to look like it. Shop smart!
