THE SALT OF THE EARTH

Salt the essential seasoning in everything whether it be meat and potatoes or brownies, it needs salt.

What is salt?

Salt is sodium chloride - and comes from the oceans. It is essential for us. Without it we could not live.  All salt tastes pretty much the same.

Salt for baking

There are many kinds of salt so which do you use in the kitchen, at the table, for baking. Is there anyone best kind? Yes there is! it is called table salt which shouldn't come as a surprise. This is the salt used by test kitchens. This is the salt you find in the stores on the bakery goods shelves. So don't try to get fancy - use table salt. You can't go wrong.

But if you want to get fancy

You could try using Sea Salt.  Put some out on the table for your guests to try if they feel the need to sprinkle anything over their steak. Sea salt is more expensive than most kinds of salt because it is produced by evaporation rather than mining. Ergo, more expensive to produce means more expensive in the stores for you.

What is Coarse Salt? Coarse salt is kosher salt.  The crystals are bigger and no iodine has been added to it.

Pickling salt - Another variation of coarse salt. Use this to make pickles. If you use regular table salt that has been iodized, it will darken your pickles. And you don't want that.

Limiting your sodium intake - While salt is great for bringing out the flavor in almost all food items, too much of a good thing is well, just too much. For anyone who needs to limit their sodium intake, it may come as a surprise to you but all prepackaged food items are overloaded with salt. The reason for this is because it is the cheapest way the processor can add flavor to the product. The less, the less flavor. For many items the amount of salt in one servings is enough salt for your body for two or three days. Take prepared soups for example - they are heavily loaded with salt. Check the food packages the next time you are in the grocery store. You would  be surprised at the levels of salt in them. This holds true even for food products that are meant to be "healthy choice" items and calorie restricted items. After all, salt doesn't add calories.

Thank you to the eBay community and our thousands of customers for making our online lincensed bakery the success it is today. And yes, we are careful of the amount of salt we use in our food products. For us, less salt does not mean less taste. :)
