As a regular seller of NGC certified and encapsulated coins, I get an occassional email regarding the quality of the NGC capsule. The new advanced NGC capsule is the best yet produced, and protects the coin as well as possible. It consists of two outer shells and the inner plastic that holds the coin. The outer shells are sonically welded, or sealed, assuring an air-tight seal. These holders are produced in huge quantities, to meet the demand of around 5,000 coins slabbed every day!. On the top and / or sides of each holder is where the outer plastic shells seperate during the production process, and what might look like a defect is actually where the sonic "weld" is holding the plastic together.
On the rare occasion when you might want to remove an NGC coin from it's holder, the procedure is simple...Simply take a hammer, or wood mallet, and strike the edge of the coin, leaning on a firm surface, several times on each side. This should break the sonic seal, and it will open right up! Make sure you are wearing glasses or protective eyewear in case shards of plastic fly off of it. The best way to preserve the surfaces of your NGC coin holder (or as the TV coin sellers call them, the "lenses"), is to use soft plastic sleeves, made for baseball cards. Get the VINTAGE size holders, designed for the slightly larger early baseball cards, that are the perfect size to protect your NGC holders for getting scratched. They are available at any baseball supply dealer, and on ebay, there are several sellers....PLEASE MARK THIS GUIDE AS HELPFUL, IF IT WAS.... HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY AND NEW YEAR !!
UPDATE - UPDATE
NGC HAS CHANGED THEIR HOLDER AGAIN TO MAKE IT HARDER TO COUNTERFEIT, ADDING 8 TRIANGULAR-SHAPED CUTS IN THE EDGE, ELIMINATING THE SONIC WELD "BLOB" SEEN ON SOME HOLDERS........
