This is an easy reliable test you can do anywhere to know if a piece of glass is cracked or chipped:

Hold the glass piece (bowl, plate, goblet, etc.) on the open palm of one hand. With your other hand, holding a common pen, ping the side of the piece. If the sound you hear is a chime, there are no chips or cracks. If the sound you hear is a thud, there is a crack or chip.
