Syracuse China Identifying Patterns Guide 2
Popular Designs
Syracuse China began operation in 1871 as Onondaga Pottery Company (OPCO) & still continues to produce china today in Syracuse New York. They are most widely known for their restaurant, hotel & railroad dining car china, although they have made fine china also. I will be writing several guides to try to help you as a buyer or seller identify some of their patterns & designs. They have made thousands of designs & it would be near impossible to identify them all. I have been selling Syracuse China on EBAY for about 5 years. SADLY I have NOT saved all of my pictures. I just recently decided to start saving them so I could write a guide. Therefore my pictures are limited. Each EBAY guide can only have 10 photographs each. This is the main reason I have to divide up the patterns into seperate guides. It may take me awhile to get all the patterns I have listed, as I have to do this in my spare time (of which I do not have much!) My first guide was on Railroad China patterns, this guide will be on more popular designs. I will have one on Hotel & restaurant designs & another on rare or hard to find patterns.
COLONIAL
Colonial a very pretty pattern, one of my favorites. Has pink rose, parrot tulip & yellow daffodils.
LODGE
Officially named LODGE by Syracuse China, I have seen it called pinecones or pines & needles. This design was once used by The Lake Placid Club and was also sold a few years ago in the LL Bean catalog.
Roxbury
Roxbury A beautiful pattern that was designed in the 1940's after the apron of one of the factory workers. This pattern is most often seen in red, but was made in brown & green as well. Although it is a stock pattern, the red version was used by the Kansas Southern Railroad. Made in a dinnerware also as MAYFLOWER
Madame Butterfly
Pretty pattern in a peach color with airbrushed rose, can also be found with a gold trim.
DeWitt Clinton
Named after a former govenor of NY state, Dewitt Clinton was often referred to as the Father of the Erie Canal. Lovely pheasant bird atop a branch & oriental looking flowers. A very popular Syracuse design.
FLORA OF THE SOUTH
I collect this pattern myself, pretty hibiscus, poinsettia, & bouganvillea, I love it. NOTE the black pinstripe. The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad used this design with a light green pinstripe. That pattern is very sought after. (if you have any email me LOL)
Oakleigh & Old Cathay
Oakleigh is a nice airbrushed leae pattern in a blue color, Old Cathay is a blue oriental design.
Coralbel, Windswept & Wayside
Coralbel,Windswept & Wayside are all 3 dinnerware rather than restaurantware. Coralbel was part of the Old Ivory line & Windswept & Wayside were part of the Carefree China Line. Note this is the design from a Wayside creamer, the various pieces have different fruits on them, pears, apples, grapes & cherries.
